Caitlyn Jenner has been named “Newsmaker of the Year” for Out Magazine’s Out100 list. The day before she sat down for her interview was a big day for Caitlyn: it was the day she legally changed her name from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn Jenner.
Yesterday was significant, because my name and gender change came through. Holy crap. Here we are —honestly never knowing if this day would ever come. In some ways, it’s a little sad. Bruce was a good guy, did a lot of good things, raised a tremendous family and wonderful kids. But I just couldn’t play that game any longer.”
I can see that: Caitlyn wanted to an authentic life. She didn’t feel it was authentic living as a man.
However, that doesn’t mean the name change wasn’t a bit emotional.
I actually cried a little bit about it. I was on the golf course, off playing by myself. It was very exciting, but such a head trip.”
This has been a time of tremendous change: it would be a bit odd if it wasn’t “a head trip,” wouldn’t it? Caitlyn is also getting used to being part of the trans community. On her show ‘I Am Cait,’ she was caught referring to the trans community as “they” instead of “we.” Oops!
I’ve never, ever been able to talk to anybody. I didn’t meet my first trans person until I did the show. The only connection I had was watching YouTube videos. And during the ’70s and ’80s, and even through the ’90s, there wasn’t any of that.”
Now, however, she’s settling into her new life.
I feel like I have a place in life.”
It’s great to see Caitlyn managing her transition with such grace, isn’t it?
