Last week Jessa Duggar Seewald and Ben Seewald welcomed their first child: a 9 lb, 11 oz, 21.5-inch long baby boy. She delivered the baby at home but had a scary moment that led to her being rushed to the hospital. Find out what happened after the break.
Jessa had an experience that a lot of women have when giving birth for the first time:
Labor is hard. It was very intense, very long. Everything was different than I expected.”
Yeah, there’s nothing like labor and childbirth to teach you that the best-laid plans can go completely sideways on you- LOL.
Jessa endured 10 hours of contractions that had her seriously reconsidering her plan for a home birth.
I said, ‘That’s it! I’m done! I am going to the hospital and I’m going to get an epidural.’ They asked me if I really wanted to do that and I said, ‘No, I don’t, but I do.’ I wanted to try natural if at all possible.”
Ben admitted it wasn’t easy seeing his wife in so much pain.
[It] was kind of emotionally difficult. I was trying to keep it positive … there were a few times, she was like, ‘I can’t do this.’ “
When their son was finally born at 6:54 pm on November 5, however, the struggle wasn’t over: Jessa began bleeding so much that her midwife became concerned. Jessa’s mother, Michelle Duggar, called for an ambulance. Jessa said:
I tried to keep my head, I was awake and alert.”
The toughest part of the whole experience was having to leave her baby at home.
I had dreamed about those first moments, getting to breastfeed right away, all that. And so when I had to go to the hospital, it was a shock.”
Jessa lost so much blood that she needed a blood transfusion. She had to stay in the hospital overnight, so the baby was brought to her in the hospital. OMG. This is what can make home childbirths so scary. What if she hadn’t gotten to the hospital in time? People forget that when people used to give birth at home, it wasn’t all that uncommon for women to die in childbirth, and baby Seewald is a big guy at over nine pounds! I’m so glad everything worked out and both Jessa and the baby are healthy.
Jessa posted this sweet family photo on Instagram:
Congratulations to Jessa and Ben! Can’t wait to find out the baby’s name :).
