Salma Hayek went way back in the day for her #TBT photo yesterday. It was interesting glimpse on what could have been- possibly an Olympic gymnast! – and how she still ended up doing something that was “not normal.” Check out the picture and hear Salma’s story after the break.
Here’s Salma’s throwback photo:
Who knew Salma used to do gymnastics?! Apparently, people thought she had real potential, too: coaches attempted to recruit her to train and see if she could become part of the Mexican National Team for the Olympics and other internationals competitions.
Salma’s father, however, said no. He had other plans for his daughter. Salma explained:
They drafted me… to be part of the Olympic team! But I was eight or nine and my father said no because I would have had to go live in Mexico City in a boarding school for gymnasts, do six hours, eight hours a day of training, which for me was like paradise.
“My father thought I wouldn’t have had a normal childhood, and he wanted me to be normal. It’s too bad that with all his efforts it didn’t work out! But anyway, it worked out for me because now I’m an actress!”
That’s a tough decision for parents to have to make. I know a pair of parents who were in a similar situation: gymnastics coaches saw real potential in their preschool-age daughter. Ultimately, however, they didn’t want her to have to basically lose her childhood and spent all of her free time doing gymnastics: they wanted her to have a normal childhood. Yet think about the possibility to become an Olympic athlete! It’s a hard choice; I don’t envy any parent who has to make a decision like that.
In Salma’s life, however, there was clearly some kind of Grand Plan for her to do something big!
