Have you been watching ABC’s new show ‘Quantico’? I’m OBSESSED with this show. It’s one of the best new ones of the season, in my opinion. Priyanka Chopra stars in ‘Quantico’ as an FBI agent who’s suspected of being a terrorist. She’s new to us in the United States but has been a big Bollywood star in India for a while.
Priyanka talked about transitioning to Hollywood.
America has been so welcoming to me.”
She admitted she hadn’t always felt that way, however. She moved to the States as a teenager and lived with her aunt and uncle after visiting with her family and falling in love with the country. Unfortunately, living here wasn’t quite the same.
When I went to school here, I didn’t see anyone who looked like me. I was called ‘Brownie’ and told, ‘Take your curry and go back to your country.’ It was hard. I wanted to go home, and I did.”
I can understand that reaction! Being a teenager is hard enough; being an outsider is even more difficult. When she returned to India, Priyanka’s mother submitted her pictures to the Miss India pageant, and she got to compete.
I won and then I won the U.K.’s Miss World pageant. So it was a good thing I went back.”
Yet that wasn’t the end of Priyanka’s experience with discrimination. She became a Bollywood actress but had an unsettling experience when discussing her salary with a producer.
He said, ‘Well if you can’t adjust we can just launch a new girl because girls are interchangeable anyways in movies.’ That stuck with me. I didn’t want to be interchangeable.”
I can understand that. Who in the world does want to be seen as “interchangeable”? She won’t be seen that way anymore: Priyanka is the first South Asian woman to star in a US TV show.
I believe in myself and my art so much. I’ve always trusted destiny. Wherever it takes me I just work damn hard at the opportunity.”
Even before that, after starring in more than 50 Bollywood films, she encountered that producer again.
I told him, ‘Well I’m pretty relevant now huh?”
LOVE it ;). I’m also loving ‘Quantico.’ If you haven’t watched, you really should. It comes on on Sunday nights on ABC!
