Once Angelina Jolie had her ovaries removed (along with her fallopian tubes), she entered menopause at the age of 40. She got them removed when tests indicated she might be in the early stages of developing cancer. Given that her mother, maternal grandmother, and a maternal aunt all died of ovary or breast cancers, and Angelina had the gene that indicated she was at risk for developing those types of cancers as well, it makes sense that she decided to take aggressive action. Now, Angelina said she’s had an easy transition into menopause.
I actually love being in menopause. I haven’t had a terrible reaction to it, so I’m very fortunate,” she said. “I feel older, and I feel settled being older.
“I feel happy that I’ve grown up. I don’t want to be young again.
“I wouldn’t want to be in my 20s or 30s again. I’m someone who didn’t think I would live very long. I’ve been worried about death and cancer and life. I think I’ve lived very much for the day.
“Now I’ve settled into my life with my children and Brad.”
That’s a great- really healthy, I think- mindset to adopt for anyone. Our society’s glorification of youth is out of control!
Angelina said that her thoughts about making ‘By The Sea’ were impacted by her health issues.
[The film] was written before I had the mastectomy. And then when I realized I was shooting the film, it did cross my mind to cut certain things [such as the film’s topless scene]. But I felt that was the wrong thing to do. That’s hiding something, and I just don’t believe in that. And then during the edit I got the call that I might have cancer and had to have my ovaries removed.”
She ultimately didn’t make the changes. Good for her! I think she still looks amazing. Don’t you?
