Everyone’s talking about the highly anticipated premiere of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ on December 18. Yet, the truth of the matter is, that’s not the only movie hitting the big screen that weekend. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s new comedy, ‘Sisters,’ will also premiere that day. And they’re ready for the competition, even if most predictions have the new ‘Star Wars’ movie dominating the box office.
Tina and Amy are planning to utilize social media. Tina explained:
Well, we have a hashtag and we’ve started a social media campaign with #YouCanSeeThemBoth.”
You can see both. Hashtag.”
They do have a point if you have that much time to spend at the movies in one weekend ;). I do think this is smart counter-programming, though. If you’re not into the force but the rest of your family is, then they can go see ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ while you munch on popcorn and enjoy ‘Sisters.’ Sounds like a win-win to me!
Although Tina and Amy play sisters in the movie, in real life they’ve been BFFs for a long time, since starting out at Chicago’s Second City Improv as well as working together at ‘Saturday Night Live.’ (I still miss them from ‘SNL’!). Amy said:
None of us have sisters – all brothers – so I think, as a woman, you get lucky if you get to choose your family and sisters and people who knew you then, but you’re not related to them, so it’s easier.”
In addition to Tina and Amy, another ‘SNL’ alum, Maya Rudolph, has a role in ‘Sisters,’ too. Amy had this to say about their group dynamic:
We like working and feeding off each other. There aren’t a lot of ball hogs on our team, so that was really fun. There wasn’t a lot of feeling like we were competing and we were feeding each other ideas and thoughts, and I think that always makes for – certainly a better experience – but often times a better film.”
I am so lucky to be a part of this weird family that we have. I love other jobs and they’re great, but when you get to do it with people’s voice you know, that’s just delicious cake.”
Something tells me ‘Sisters’ is going to be hilarious. Maybe I really will spend the weekend of December 18 at the movie theater. I can always do my holiday shopping on the internet, right?
