Prince Harry has been much more emotional as he’s picked up the pace of his public appearances as a high-ranking member of the royal family after leaving the British army. The above picture, where he hugged a sedated elephant, is a perfect example of that openness. So what’s going on?
Here’s why the above picture was so important to Prince Harry:
Prince Harry has released this personal photo taken during his summer visit to southern Africa. Here Prince Harry shares his story behind the photograph… “After a very long day in Kruger National Park, with five rhinos sent to new homes and three elephants freed from their collars – like this sedated female – I decided to take a moment. I know how lucky I am to have these experiences, but hearing stories from people on the ground about how bad the situation really is, upset and frustrated me. How can it be that 30,000 elephants were slaughtered last year alone? None of them had names, so do we not care? And for what? Their tusks? Seeing huge carcasses of rhinos and elephants scattered across Africa, with their horns and tusks missing is a pointless waste of beauty.” Photograph © Prince Harry
Clearly he’s passionate about this cause.
Harry’s also passionate about supporting disabled veterans. His warmth impressed US Marines that he met at Buckingham Palace on November 1. After giving US Marine Kirstie Ennis a hug upon greeting her, she said:
It was probably one of the realest hugs I’ve ever received in my entire life. There was nothing fake about it. It was a pure and honest gesture.”
So why is the prince becoming more outspoken and warm? A friend of Harry’s explained:
It is more of the same – he is just a natural person. He is funny, kind, tough.”
Harry also seems to be becoming more confident in his public role as a royal.
It’s important for him because that’s where he, and his brother and sister-in-law, learn the most information – then they are in a position to speak more openly.”
Sounds like Harry is happy to use his position for important causes. Good for him! He also sounds a lot like his mother, Princess Diana, who was also known for her personal warmth.
