Prince William has spoken about how this is an exciting Christmas in the Cambridge household because it’s the first year that Prince George understands what the holiday is about. Of course, they also have a new family member: Princess Charlotte! Word has it that William and Kate Middleton plan to buck royal tradition a bit to make sure their kids have a fun holiday.
Royal tradition is that the family exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve, attends church service on Christmas morning, have a formal lunch after the service, and then gather to listen to Queen Elizabeth’s annual address to the public. However, William and Kate won’t be participating in all the festivities.
They will be at the gift exchange the night before, but that won’t be as extravagant an affair as one might expect. A source explained:
The queen doesn’t like extravagance when it comes to presents, so there is never an abundance of them. The royals actually have a limit on how much they spend on each other, like Secret Santa.”
Apparently they actually have fun seeing who can get the cheapest and tackiest present!
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to attend the church service on Christmas morning, but word has it they won’t be attending the lunch afterwards. That’s probably because Kate and William will be playing host to Kate’s family: her parents, as well as her sister Pippa and brother James will all be staying at Anmer Hall for Christmas, so they’ll likely host their own lunch at Anmer Hall. There will also probably be a lot more presents for Charlotte and George ;).
Prince George is the most excited about Christmas out of anyone in the family! Obviously Princess Charlotte is too little to know what is going on, but George is not! He is super excited about Christmas and his little sister’s first Christmas.
“The family can’t wait to make a fuss of Princess Charlotte and, of course, Prince George. James, like Uncle Harry, dotes on her so when it comes to gifts from the uncles they are going to be a little spoiled.
“Pippa always puts a lot of thought into present giving. She is renowned within the family for her attention to detail and plans for months ahead, so little Charlotte will be very lucky. She is big on getting personalized mementos, so [she] may have had something engraved for Charlotte or a cute little Christmas outfit with her name on it. James has got a great sense of humor, as does Carole, so there will no doubt be some fun festive attire from him.”
William reportedly wants his children to enjoy a more informal Christmas: you can see the influence of his mother, the late Princess Diana, there! It sounds like a great compromise that will hopefully satisfy both the royal family as well as the Middletons.
