ELLE Photo Sparks Controversy!

Yesterday we gave you a fresh look at ELLE’s February covers- all four of them, which featured Amy Poehler, Allison Williams, Zooey Deschanel and Mindy Kahling.  After her cover was released on Monday, Jan. 6, however, critics were quick to point out that Kaling received a different treatment than fellow honorees- she is the only woman featured in black and white, and her picture is  cropped to focus on her face, as opposed to her entire body, like the other cover women. Styleite‘s Lauren Valenti weighs in:

“Kaling has said publicly that she’s a size 8, and while that’s an average size for normal women, it’s not exactly the Hollywood status quo. It would have been a powerful move for Elle to show a full-length shot, especially considering that they’ve landed in turmoil for failing to do just that with Gabourey Sidibe [one of the magazine's October 2010 cover girls].”

Elle stands by its cover treatment, in a statement on E! News.

“Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic. We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue.”

Kaling, 34, has yet to comment. What do you think of ELLE’s cover choices?

Got Dating Advice From SNL’s LORNE MICHAELS

Jimmy Fallon took his SNL stint very seriously, and took founder Lorne Michael‘s advice whenever he could! In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jimmy talks about the fatherly relationship he had with the SNL mogul and how it helped him through his transition from Saturday Night Live to Late Night. Says Jimmy:

“Lorne helped me with everything—with relationships, with me getting famous,” Fallon tells the interviewer. “I was going through certain steps, and there were certain things I couldn’t talk to my dad about, because he wouldn’t know. Like ‘I have money now. Do I still rent? Do I buy an apartment?’ Or ‘I’m in L.A., and I have to rent a car.’ [“Lorne” voice] ‘You should get a Lexus, because you want to be quiet.’ Or ‘Should I date this actress?’ [“Lorne” voice] ‘You can date her, but you probably shouldn’t marry her.’ And he’d be totally right.”

Man, talk about a mentor!  Check more of the interview out at Vanity Fair, or take a gander at who Fallon chose to spend his life with, wife Nancy Juvonen (they have a daughter together, Winnie). They seem super happy…so does Jimmy have Lorne to thank?

Going Glam For Glamour

Glamour February

Are you excited to see Shakira return to ‘The Voice‘ for the winter 2014 season? She had some great advice for her mentees last year, I thought. Shakira is also the perfect choice for Glamour’s February issue, because it’s the “hair flip” issue. This means Shakira’s on both the front and back covers. When you “flip” the issue over, you get a mini-magazine packed with hair tips. Shakira also sat down to chat with Glamour.

Shakira on her duet with Rihanna…“[W]orking with her was utopia. She’s the sexiest woman on the planet. And at the end of the day, we’re both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real. She taught me dance moves. She was a sweet teacher.”

Shakira on working with fellow The Voice judge Adam Levine and other men in the industry…“Dealing with boys at work and being the only girl can be challenging. I have my insecurities, but I’ve learned I have to be a good sport. I have to be able to take certain jokes and not take them personally. There are jokes made almost every second of the day. I had to develop a tough hide. You know, the music industry is dominated by guys. I work with men 98 percent of the time—producers, arrangers, musicians, engineers.”

Shakira on her success…“Success happened little by little for me. I tasted the flavor of fame in small doses: I started at 10 years old when I won a music contest; I was performing at birthday parties, company meetings. I met with a record executive when I was 13 and sang ‘Material Girl’ to a cassette-tape boom box. I’ve shaken hands at every radio station, from Honduras to Ryan Seacrest’s. One day [I realized I was famous] enough. But here’s the thing: I’m still hungry. But I’m not hungry for fame—just the need to prove to myself that I can still do this.”

Shakira on her vision for her life…“I feel like I’m not on earth just to shake it and shake it endlessly, you know?”

Shakira on whether she has gotten any grief from Latin fans about her blond hair or being too thin…“At the beginning. But my man, Gerard, prefers meat over bone. He doesn’t like too skinny. [Laughs.] That takes pressure off. I already have a lot to worry about. This month I’m not exercising because I have an album to finish and I have a baby. And I like these pastries in front of me.”

Shakira on whether the injustice she saw growing up planted the seed for her education charity…“Being raised in a developing country opened my eyes to so much I cannot tolerate. In Colombia, education is sometimes considered a luxury, not a human right. And it’s not a priority in the agendas of many leaders. I feel a real sense of duty to use the voice and the platform I’ve been afforded by my fame to speak out for those whose voices don’t get a chance to be heard. [The Barefoot Foundation] provides education to vulnerable kids who live in extreme poverty. We’ve built six schools in Colombia and do work in South Africa and Haiti. We teach 5,000 students.”

You can read Shakira’s entire interview, and check out the hair tips, in the February issue of Glamour. It hits newsstands on January 14 and is available digitally now.

Seventeen Cover Girl Opens Up About Cutting

February 2014 - Troian Bellisario

Pretty Little Liars‘ star Troian Bellisario is the cover girl for Seventeen magazine for their February issue! Troian really opened up to Seventeen, talking about her problems with cutting and how she’s currently doing. Here’s some of what Troian said:

How she responds to her fans saying she’s perfect: “I’ve heard fans say that I’m perfect on the show and I want to tell them I’ve been through two hours of hair and makeup. Don’t hold yourself up to that!”

On dealing with the challenges of being a teenager: “I started self-harming when I was a junior. I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school.…I didn’t know what was right and what was wrong, so I think I created this bizarre system of checks and balances to create order in my world. But it really backfired.”

How she differs from her onscreen persona Spencer in Pretty Little Liars: “Sometimes I feel like I’m trying too hard, like I don’t belong. I just look around at Lucy [Hale], Shay [Mitchell], and Ashley [Benson], and I’m just like, Why am I on this show? Sometimes I’ve felt like a fraud. Like, I’m not like these other girls – I don’t dress like that and don’t know how to do my hair. The minute I’m off that stage, I try to get as “me” as possible. I do that by piling on my black eyeliner, and I put on my ripped tights. Dressing like myself again helps.”

On what makes her happiest now: “My friends and my family – the people who I love and who love me back. Whenever I get down, when I want to crawl under a rock, I just look around at them and I see how rich my life is. You have to remember what’s most important in life. I am loved by so many people and have a wonderful job. I know I’m incredibly blessed. I am a completely lucky human being.”

It’s great to see Troian is doing better these days! You can read her entire interview on Seventeen magazine starting today, January 7. On top of that, the new season of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ debuts tonight!

ELLE’s February Issue Cover Girls

More is better when it comes to ELLE’s  February issue!  This month, ELLE has four strong, hilarious, successful women on four different covers!  Which cover do you like best- Zooey Deschanel, Mindy Kahling, Allison Williams or Amy Poehler?

Here’s a snippet from each of their interviews…

Zooey on how growing up in Hollywood affected her: Definitely none of the kids I grew up with would have ever thought, Zooey will be on television and have her own show.  I wasn’t the world’s most popular child, which gave me built-in tenacity.  Nothing has ever come easy for me, and I think that’s a really good thing.  I learned at an early age that you have to work hard for what you get.”

Allison on where she wants her career to go: “I want to play a villain.  I want to play a romantic heroine.  I want to play someone who’s on heroin.  There’s nothing I don’t want to do.  I want to play a guy at some point.  I’ll gain 100 pounds, I’ll cut my hair off, I’ll do whatever.  I’m not precious about any of it.”

Amy on the conflict between being a comedian and being a grown-up: “Now that I have kids, I’m up at 5:30AM no matter what.  Sleep at this point is just a concept, something I’m looking forward to investigating in the future.  But I’d like to say that I maintain that same sense of play and creativity and spontaneity – of being able to get into a room with people and say, ‘Let’s waste some time.’  When you’re a creative person, even when you’re in a position of power, you still have to be able to straddle both worlds.”

Mindy on how the The Mindy Project getting green-lit served as a desperately needed distraction from her mother’s death: “Any person that’s been in the business knows they’re so lucky to have their show picked up – it happens to such a small fraction of shows.  But I was lucky personally, because I needed a distraction so badly from my grief.  Still my thoughts flutter toward her in scenes that I’m doing, every night before I go to bed, and every morning when I wake up.”

Marie Claire’s February Cover Girl

Guess which Hollywood A-lister showed up on the cover of Marie Claire’s February issue, which hits stands January 14th? You guessed it, Drew Barrymore! In an exclusive interview with Marie Claire, the actress discusses her family life, career and love of cooking while pregnant!

On her childhood and teenage years: “When I was a kid, everything was so unplanned, my parents were so erratic, and my world was so inconsistent…I was 14 when I moved into my own apartment. I was so scared. I didn’t know anything. I didn’t know you had to throw food out when it rotted in the fridge. I was convinced someone was going to crawl through my window. I would go to the Laundromat and sit there reading Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath.”

On her relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore: “Ugh, I mean, my relationship with my mom is so complicated that…I’ve always been empathetic toward my mom, and I was even more so when I had a kid and we had a really amazing conversation about it. However, it hasn’t enabled me to lessen the distance. It’s the hardest subject in my life. I’ve never just been angry with her. I’ve always felt guilt and empathy and utter sensitivity. But we can’t really be in each other’s lives at this point.”

On marrying into the Kopelman family: “I didn’t think I would ever get to experience that. This is so safe and positive and healthy because they have their values intact. It was huge for me. And that’s what I want for my family.”

On the modern world: “I’m so weary of the modern world. I’m not really of this era, so I’m struggling with that…I don’t want to talk about sex anymore. I used to be so open. But now people are like, ‘Let’s explore our sexuality!’ And I’m like, ‘Let’s not!’ I’m such a prude these days.”

On baby #3? “I think I’d like to have more. In the back of my head, I’m already timing if I was to have another when that would occur.”

On Author David Sedaris: “He is my absolute favorite ever. If I saw him in person, I’d freeze and say nothing. And then I’d say too much. I’d be a crazy person. And probably vomit. And pee on myself.”

Strong words from a woman who has it all together! Check out more of the interview at Marie Claire, or pick up a physical copy on January 14th!

Meet Maxim’s Woman Of The Year!

eva longoria maxim woman of the year 2014 (1)

2014 is getting off on a great note for Eva Longoria! Maxim named the former ‘Desperate Housewives‘ star their Woman of the Year. Eva sounds like she was thrilled by the news. She said:

“It’s especially awesome after how long it’s been since my first cover. I’ve had a beautiful relationship with Maxim over all these years … When someone sees the cover of this issue, they’re going to say, ‘¡Que rico!’ … Say it when something is really good.”

Eva also shared a little secret: she’s actually a domestic goddess.

“One thing people are usually surprised about when they get to know me is how domestic I am. So when you see the sexy Maxim cover and then you put it against me in an apron with flour in my hair, it takes a moment to reconcile that image.”

Not for us, it doesn’t- LOL. It’s the story of our lives, right? Congratulations, Eva!
