Mary J Blige And Russell Simmons Speak To PS 165 Students At The Rush Art Gallery

Mary J Blige And Russell Simmons Speak To PS 165 Students At The Rush Art Gallery

INO was invited to cover this event and I sent along my writer, Victoria. Here's her recap:

Russell Simmons and Mary J Blige made an appearance at the Rush Art Gallery to speak to students from PS 165 who participated in the “Building Bounty-ful Bridges” project.

Through Bounty's partnership with Rush Philanthropic, children across the country will be able to express their creativity by creating a large-scale collaborative painting that "bridges" them creatively with others across the country. This is in perfect sync with Bounty's mission to provide children with hands-on fun activities that nurture their creativity and curiosity.

Before the surprising appearances, each student drew a part of the Washington Bridge and later connected the pieces together.

“We are all the same, we just need to find the connection,” said Russell Simmons about the initiative. He went on to speak about the importance of his project, “art opens up your heart, art opens up the doors for you.”

"Art is a great platform to unleash the imagination. The Building Bounty-ful Bridges program is a great opportunity for youth throughout the country to express themselves through the arts."

Mary J Blige gave an inspirational speech as well saying that her whole life "is an expression" and encouraged the students to "never give up".

The kids were excited to see Mary, screaming out “sing a song for us” and taking pictures on their cell phones. The singer gave everyone a hug and posed for the photographs before taking off. The event was sponsored by Bounty which is partnering with Russell Simmons' Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation to draw attention to the significance of youth arts education.

What a great cause!

Gucci And Mary J. Blige Celebrate The Foundation For The Advancement Of Women Now

Gucci And Mary J. Blige Celebrate The Foundation For The Advancement Of Women Now

To benefit the Foundation For the Advancement of Women Now, Inc. (FFAWN), Gucci and Mary J. Blige celebrated September 16th as Gucci for FFAWN Day in New York. Gucci donated 10% percent of the day’s sales from its New York 5th Avenue Flagship store to FFAWN.

Gucci toasted the evening with a private in-store cocktail party co-hosted by Mary J. Blige with guests including Alicia Keys, Estelle, Devon Aoki, Leigh Lezark, Serena Williams, Mark Ronson, Donald Trump, Russell Simmons and Lebron James.

In honor of Gucci for FFAWN Day, Mary J. Blige hosted a lighting ceremony at the Empire State Building earlier in the day to light the world-famous icon in FFAWN’s colors—purple, yellow and white.

I always love to find out the meaning behind the Empire State Building's colors.

Mary J. Blige Can Relate To The Pain Of Others

Mary J. Blige Can Relate To The Pain Of Others

Mary J Blige “relates” to other people’s pain. The ‘Just Fine’ singer – who has previously spoken of her unhappy childhood and battles with drug and alcohol addiction – insists her tough upbringing made her determined to succeed so she could help others.

“I've been in my bed at night and listened to women screaming for their lives because they were being physically beaten by men. Even as a child, I vowed to do anything in my power to help women and build them up. I relate to the pain of others.

“I hear from women who say, 'I was an alcoholic, but because of you and what you did in your life, I stopped.' I hear, 'I got out of an abusive marriage when you made me realize I should divorce this man because of a special song you wrote about love gone wrong.' It's really humbling. This thing I do is big.”

Mary, 38, claims she only managed to get her life on track after realizing she is responsible for her own happiness and well-being.

She also claims people spend too long obsessing about the negative aspects of their lives, rather than moving on.

She told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper:

“Let me be real frank and hardcore - it's tough times. If you're in a low spot feeling sorry for yourself, you're not going to get out of the spot if you wallow in your pity. You have to make you feel better.

“What I've learned and want to pass on is that nobody is going to make you feel good about yourself and make you realize that you're a beautiful woman or man. You have to do it.”

Words to live by.

Stars React To Chris Brown's Apology

Stars React To Chris Brown's Apology

As you can imagine, celebrities' reaction to Chris Brown's apology run the gamut!  Not unlike ours, I'd imagine.  Here are some reactions.

Gayle King, Oprah Winfrey's best friend, is not having it.

Right now I can't think of anything that makes me support anything that
Chris Brown is saying at this time. And my heart just aches for Rihanna."

Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku seemed to feel the same way.

Any way, shape or form of domestic violence is inexcusable in my book."

Singer Carrie Underwood is more neutral.

I don't think anybody actually knows what happened. I have no advice
because, thank goodness, I've never been in any kind of abusive
situation. You hear a new one every five minutes, and some of them are
getting kind of ridiculous. I really hope everyone will lay off and
just let everybody who's involved figure out everything first."

I'm not sure what's ridiculous, but that's all the quote says.

Jay-Z, however, seems to be most concerned about his protege, Rihanna.

This is a real situation. You have to have compassion for others. Just
imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should
talk about that. I just think we should all support her. She's going
through a tough time. You have to realize she's a young girl, as well.
She's very young."

And others are just trying to support both Chris and Rihanna during a difficult time.
