I had the honor of being invited to attend
Shinnyo-en's Six Billion Paths to Peace gala and have walked away a changed woman. As usual, I got a little teary eyed during the ceremony - I swear I need to be put on medication. Even had a little chat with
Mira Sorvino who swore up and down I was evil. I wanted to scream, "Lady, I'm a mom of two and am on your side!" but instead just kept reassuring her I was there with good intentions.
So
Shinnyo-en is an organization dedicated to bring about and promote peace. At first, I thought to myself about how broad (and impossible) their mission was. But then I realized that it really can be that simple. If everyone did a few small things a day, imagine what a world of difference it would make. I swear by the time dessert was coming out, I was thinking up names for my new non-for-profit. Ok, I am exaggerating... but only slightly. :)
Four people were honored tonight:

--
Morgan Freeman, Academy Award-winning actor and founder of PLAN!T NOW (an initiative supporting victims of and regions affected by natural disasters)

--
Mira Sorvino, Academy Award-winning actress and supporter of Amnesty International

--
Marc Ecko, fashion designer and founder of Sweat Equity Enterprises
--
Brett Hickey, founder of Acorn Charities

(I was part of the paparazzi line)

And I just want to say something about Mira. Many actresses fall victim to their beauty. And when I say that, I'm not talking about the ones who say it's so HARD to make it in the industry because they are so pretty. I'm talking about women like Mira Sorvino, whose charitable efforts and educational background go unnoticed because of how beautiful she is. Mira's passion lies with the victims of Darfur and as she spoke, I did everything I could to not cry. Because these terrible things are occurring right now in different parts of the world - and it's so easy to forget. Attending this gala made me remember that we each have a responsibility to do something. And I'm going to start doing what I can.

Yes, another heart over my face. I am telling you - I get crazy eyes when I take pictures with celebrities. This picture had the SAME EXACT look as when I met
Carmen Electra. I don't know what is UP with me.
UPDATE: I got a TON of emails asking me why Mira thought I was evil. It's because I told her I wrote a celebrity gossip blog. And then she started to D-R-I-L-L me on my intentions of being there and how I was going to cover the story. I kept saying, "No, my site is nice! It's PG. I never say anything mean!". But I really don't think she believed me. Then whoever she was with said that they are going to come to the site and see if I was for real.
It was an interesting exchange. I was basically defending myself the entire time... but I guess she has one thought about how gossip sites are run and she really couldn't believe that I was PG and friendly.
