The 2009 AFI Festival 'Precious' Hollywood Premiere

I hope people go out and see this movie. I read the book (Push) many moons ago and it was tragic and unbelievable. A story that stays with you. A story that changes you.
Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, Will Smith, Oprah, Tyler Perry, Olivia Wilde, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Lisa Edelstein, Paula Abdul, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon and Mo'Nique attended the 'Precious' premiere at the AFI Film Festival over the weekend.
I'm going to put the summary of the movie under the cut because there are some disturbing topics that are covered. Click on the continue reading link to read it.
Have you read 'Push' or are you planning on seeing 'Precious'?
Tyler Perry Discusses Abusive Childhood

Tyler Perry explains why the movie 'Precious' moved him so much that he signed on as executive producer after seeing it at a film festival: because of his own experiences as an abused child.
"[A]s I child I always thought I would die before I grew up...
"My father came home, mad at the world," he writes. "He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back."
That's only one of the many horrific experiences Tyler recounts on his website. He also writes about watching his father beat his mother, his own experience being sexually abused by a friend's mother, and one time when his grandmother bathed him in ammonia.
Tyler wrote that any money he or Oprah Winfrey make from 'Precious' will be donated to charity and why he wants people to see this film.
I sat there in tears realizing that somehow, by the grace of God, I made it through. My tears were tears of joy, being thankful that I made it... It gave me so much hope after watching it. For everyone who has been a Precious, male or female, this movie will make you so glad you made it through.
What a powerful endorsement for a film.

Entertainment Mogul Tyler Perry Talks About Finding Mrs. Right

The man behind major movie hits like Why Did I Get Married? and the Madea movies, entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, has overcome incredible adversity, such as child abuse and poverty, while trying to succeed as a director/actor/writer. He actually made his success outside of the Hollywood system and has built his own movie studio outside of Atlanta.
Yet even he has trouble finding Mrs. Right.
'…Relationships are tough. Then you add fame and money on top of that.
Then people and tabloids and gossip and blogs -- put all of that stuff
on top -- it's tough,' Tyler tells Essence magazine."
It's typically women I hear complaining about this, not men. Certainly not famous, wealthy, successful men! But even with all the perks of celebrity, nothing is perfect.
Do you think relationships are more complicated with fame and money? Not to mention people and tabloids and (*ahem*) gossip and (*cough*) blogs?
(And in the interest of accuracy, let me point out that the pictures of Tyler with actresses Sanaa Lathan and Taraji P. Henderson were taken at the movie premiere of The Family That Preys ;) ).
