The pair has been dating since 2004. Ellen made the announcement on her show and the crowd went WILD and gave them a standing ovation!

It's pretty gross that we live in a culture in which Mariah and Nick can date for SIX WEEKS and have some lameass ceremony anywhere they please, whereas Portia and Ellen have been in love for FOUR YEARS and JUST NOW got the right to have their own nuptuals.

My problem with gay marriage lies not in the gay but in the disrespect of marriage across the board. To marry is a religious act, it is meant for 2 people who are committed to being each other's everything spiritually and in life. It doesn't include divorce or other things not in line with religion. The same way you get baptized as a christian, you marry. Unless a person is committed to religion and the lifestyle of religion then marriage should not be an option. I don't care if you are heterosexual or gay, to marry is to go before God and choose to put someone before yourself. It means that you are religious and respectful of religion and a practicer of religion.
The people ruining marriage are the people who are neither of those but choose to continue aligning themselves to a Christian practice and belief while condemning the religion. Straight or gay, doesn't matter. Religion is the fundamental base for the practice of marriage and somewhere in society that was forgotten.
So since was married by a judge instead of a minister, does that mean my marriage is less valid? Gasp! What will I tell the kids?
If marriage was strictly a religious act, than we would have to forbid atheists to marry as well. They aren't looking for a church marriage, but a legal one, and all the legal rights and privileges that come with being a married couple. There are state officials (Justice of the peace) who preform legal marriage ceremonies - God is not a part of the marriage vows stated by these officials.
And to those who say that gay marriage makes a "mockery" of the institution of marriage (An argument I have heard so many times) , believe me, straight people are already doing a fine job of this...with the high divorce rates, infidelity, spousal abuse...I could go on.

Marriage is an idea. Ideas are interesting things. Some people have them, and some people live in them.
Marriage is a civil contract. Christians did not invent marriage, nor does a gay marriage have any affect on your marriage if you are a Christian (or not). The STATE governs marriage, not the church. People have been getting married long before Christ. Marriage has, and continues to be, a way to unite two separate individuals into one unit. Usually as it pertains to property (at one time the woman and the children WERE the property but that's not so today, at least here in the US). Marriage is a way for the state, the tribe, the ruler of the group, whatever, to make choices. THAT is the fundamental reason for marriage.
What your marriage means to you is your business. But when we're discussing the law, we're discussing marriage as a civil right, not as a religious insitution. As such, the bible has no bearing on it. The state and federal constitution does. There's a little thing called EQUAL PROTECTION, it's a pretty fundamental cornerstone of democracy. I know many people find the constitution to be a nuisance but I and the founding fathers of this nation think it's pretty important.
Equal protection means all laws are applied the same to all citizens. So black children get the same schooling that white children do - Brown v Board of Education and one of the most important Equal Protection cases in our nation's history.
What you believe for yourself is your business and your right. What you try to shove down my throat based on your religion when your religion has NOTHING to do with state governed contracts IS my business and yes, I am intolerant of people trying to legitimize bigotry of any type. As in, I think your opinion is wrong headed, hateful and ill informed but I would not make it illegal for you to express it. The key is, if marriage to you means no divorce and no gay people, you do it that way. Why is it so important for you to be involved in what other people do? Why do folks with your mindset seem so obsessed with what gay people do anyway? It's unnatural.

I understand why people are upset about the word marriage. I agree people who get married or committed should be in it whole heartedly, but I think this is crazy that people shouldn't be allowed to commit legally. I think it is great to promote this because this is a huge step from the 80's. I truly feel that it stops promoting promiscuity and promotes being with one person.
