Twilight Preview - My Newest Obsession

I went to Barnes and Nobles last week to get a crossword puzzle book (yes, I roll like that) and a new read. I didn't have time to figure out which book I would purchase, so I decided that whatever the store was making the most fuss over at the moment would be my choice.  Not the best way to select a book, but I was desperate. I walk in and - BOOM - I get smacked in the face with this Twilight series. I'm talking book clubs, pre-ordering the 4th book, free giveaways, Thursday meet ups, the works. I've read all of Anne Rice's work and enjoyed it. So I took one and went on my way.

I went home and began to read it and was surprised that the main character was in High School. After a few moments, I realized that this was a young adult series!! BUT it was about vampires and I was desperate to start reading again. So I kept going despite being unable to relate to chemistry tests and fights at the lunch table. Thankfully, the book didn't concentrate on that because it turned out to be something I couldn't put down. I am now up to Eclipse (third book of series).

The movie is different from the book. I can see that from the trailer which annoys me to no end. But isn't that always the way?The film comes out in December. But if you are a vampire fan, I would recommend you reading the book before seeing the movie (if you are willing to travel back in time a bit and start popping gum and forgetting to do your homework).

Here is the trailer.

Thanks for your suggestion, Vera! Harry Potter exPLODed while I was still in college, and I shunned that series for years. One boring January weekend, though, I quietly asked a dormmate if I could read the first one, and ended up reading the FIRST THREE -- rabidly -- in the span of three days! This series sounds dangerous that way, but I'll definitely check it out eventually.

I love this series too! I worked at a bookstore for a little bit and could not bring myself to buy it. After I quit and was back to being a full time stay at home mom, I got it at the library and was hooked. So far I have gotten 3 other women into it and all are waiting for Breaking Dawn. It is so well written and fun. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Right now I am reading the Historian. Another vampire book. Really good so far too.

The Historian is NEXT on my list. I found out about it AFTER I was talking about Twilight. I am excited about that one as well because I heard it goes into detail about the history of the vampire.

You HAVE to go get the other two books. This is my favorite series of all time. I can not wait for the movie. I was surprised when I figured out it was a young adult series, too but they're just so good it doesn't matter.

I also am a stay at home mommy and picked up Twilght a few weeks ago, under much the same circumstances. Holy Cow what a great series! I finished the second book at 11PM and was bummed that I had to wait until the next morning to run to BN to buy the third! I haven't felt that way about a book...well, ever! Thanks for the suggestion about The Historian, I need a filler book until the fourth Twilght comes out on 8/1!

the cast still annoys me although i've convinced myself to make peace with it. vera go check out henry cavill and emily browning or brown or whatnot, and you'll see not only are they just PERFECT for the roles, they're the better actors. i was actually really REALLY looking forward to this movie and then the second trailer really bummed me out. dont get me wrong, im still gonna watch it, but not with the anticipation that i hoped for.

When you were covering the MTV movie awards I'd posted hoping for some pictures of the cast. I love all of the books in the series (have read each multiple times) and cannot wait for Breaking Dawn. If you're looking for good (or what I enjoy anyway) vampire fiction try Kim Harrison (Dead Witch Walking series), Laurell K. Hamilton (the earlier Anita Blake books are still a favorite) or Charlaine Harris (who's Sookie Stackhouse books have been made into the new HBO show True Blood).

I love these books and can not wait for the movie. I think it looks pretty good, and I think it looks pretty close to the book.

LOL I thought the exact same things! My husband and I were listening as we traveled from Florida to Tennessee and I was surprised I"d never heard of it before. I've also pre-ordered the book and can't wait for the film. I was and still am so obsessed!

By the way I'm 24 and my husband is 27.

I'm so glad you started reading that series as well. I heard all the hype about it and read it out of curiosity then became a bit embarrassed when I started to love it because it is a young adult novel! lol, but its so addicting.

I admit, I had never heard of this series a couple of months ago. I was walking through Sam's, saw the books, read the blurb, and thought it might be interesting.

I started reading and realized it was about vampires, so not my usual genre of lit, but I was hooked on the story of Bella and Edward.

Now I'm hooked and the TWILIGHT series is popping up everywhere. Yay!!!

Forewarning: These books will take over your life. There are three of at work who have all read the books and it is all we talk and think about. Lulls in the conversation are always stopped with someone saying three simple words ... "Edward and Bella."

My life was complete before I read Twilight ... but I won't go back ;-)

The new Stephaine Meyers book "the Host" is being billed as her first "adult" novel, but it is pretty tame. Imaginative though, with far less teen angst than the Twilight series. But my best friend and I will be right there when the Twilight movie comes out! And for those of you embarrassed because you are well into your 20's and are obsessed with a "teen" series - we are career women/wives/mothers in our 40's! Another GREAT series I just read is by Gena Showalter: "Darkest Night", "Darkest Kiss" and "Darkest Pleasure." The premise is that there are 6 ancient (HOT!)warriors of the gods who opened Pandora's Box and each became the host for a different demon who was unleashed. They are quick, fun reads for those of you who like some myth and magic , and a little bit more "adult" than the Meyers books.

I read about 50 pages of one and I hated it. They're like the baby sitter's club and vampires mixed together. Horrible.

I stayed up too late reading the twilight series! But I guess that is the only time a mom of two little ones has time to read. I can't wait to read the 4th!

Passerby Passerby said:

you'll like the historian. It's long, but worth it. I enjoyed it and they are going to make it into a movie too.

TWILIGHT! :D I love the Twilight series! But I do agree with another poster that once you get into it, it will take away A LOT of your time. I read the first book in a day. And the same for the other two books. Can't wait till the 4th one comes out!! Eeek.

But the movie....yeah, I agree with you. I'm not too impressed so far. But it's Twilight, and good or not, I'll be there to see it. :)

Wanna know how much of a geek I am?
My friend and I are going to a midnight Breaking Dawn release, and we'll be wearing "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob" t-shirts, respectively.
I'm 39 and she's 30. It's pretty much all we talk about lately. *sigh*

ok, I just have to say that you are always surprising me, Vera, with what we have in common! I must admit that I used to play WoW a bit and know you have too.
On the Twilight series...
I tore through the first two books a couple of weeks ago and I have forced myself to wait on the last one, so that I won't be tortured waiting for the next one to come out!

The best book series ever. So glad you are reading them. For me the movie is just an extension of the books, something to get excited about, something to have fun with.

I'm not reading anything Twilight related until I finish the books. I seriously never thought this was "my thing" but holy crap I was wrong. I cant' put it down. And I feel like I"m stoned or intoxicated when I take a break from reading. How pathetic is that? ROFL

I'm so glad I'm not the only "adult" obsessed w/ the books! Luckily I was trying to resist the Twilight explosion & got hooked after Breaking Dawn came out so I could obsessively read all 4 in a row. Now there's no going back! I think the 2nd movie will be better than the 1st w/ the new director.
