Maggie Gyllenhaal Says Heath Ledger Deserves An Oscar

I just keep thinking how strange it is for a movie to be this huge after the death of one of the starring actors. But, really, it's a tribute to Heath Ledger that Dark Knight has been SO insanely successful. Maggie Gyllenhaal thinks that he deserves an Oscar for the movie.

"Degree of difficulty should be incorporated into the award."

Can't argue with that one. And Maggie went on to say,

"To be that incredible in a movie that's this huge, that's about so many things, is really an accomplishment," she said. "In a way I feel funny thinking about the Oscars when he isn't alive, but at the same time I'm a member of the Academy and I would vote for him."

On his performance she added,

"In order to be a good actor you have to find a place where you are free, but it's very unusual to be absolutely free in the way that he was in this movie It was inspiring working with him."

Heath even has fans campaigning for him. So who knows, maybe the Academy will take notice. Do you think Heath should get an Oscar for his role as the Joker?

From what I've heard, he absolutely deserves it. My roommate said he was amazing and that his character even messed with your head a little. I'm hoping to see it this weekend. I don't even like any of the batman, spiderman, superman movies but this one is getting such amazing reviews I just have to see it.

I completely agree. There are very few people who completely captivate me with their performance. It was amazing that I didn't even remember it was Heath Ledger while I was watching what is sure to be considered an epic performance. Of course, I also think a lot of the hype is due to his death which is sad. Because this was truly an amazing performance by an amazing actor and should be considered as such....not a "tribute" to a man who died too soon.

His role in this film was getting a ton of buzz before he passed on....now it's explosive. I haven't seen it yet (plan to here soon) but many people I know have watched it more than once. To go back and re-watch a film you JUST paid to watch....I think that speaks volumes right there. From the clips I've seen, he looks amazing in this movie.

He should! I've seen the movie twice already because it's just that good! He is an extremely creepy joker and most of the movie you can't even tell it's Heath Ledger!!

heck yeah he should, and if he doesn't the Oscar awards is a bunch of crap.

he definitely deserves an oscar. there was no break between heath and the joker - it was completely all-consuming. heath ledger quite literally became the joker and lost himself in the role. it was phenomenal to watch.

I just saw Dark Night ysterday - WOW! Heath was amazing! He really catured the character, and that is an understatement! I really does deserve an Academy Award! And, I would think that even if he was still with us! A truely incredible preformance!

Would be interesting to see him get a nomination. He did an excellent job, although I never forgot it was him behind the makeup. Can't really say if he deserves the actual award until you know what performances his would be nominated with.

absolutely! I saw the film over the weekend and I agree with one of the posts before me, he completely lost himself in the role.. he WAS the joker! For an actor to be that incredibly into his role is amazing... GREAT JOB HEATH! we miss you!

I was also one who forgot it was Heath Ledger playing the joker.. I walked in there expecting to be saddened by watching a young actor who died so suddenly act in this movie.. But that was soon short lived... His performance captivated me, He IS the JOKER.... Enough said.

everyone says that because he DIED. as much as I loved him, it's just batman, it's not casablanca. meh.

Have you seen the movie? Because I thought that as well until I saw it. His performance is GREAT. All I saw onscreen was the Joker. The whole movie was amazing.

So because of the type of movie he was in his performance doesn't deserve an award? Wow. How incredibly judgmental and elitist you are.

I said "casablanca" as an example. But then again I may say: it's just as pointless as when meryl streep was nominated because of the devil wears prada. The movie is only receiving great publicity because of his death - sad, but true.

The success of this movie is primarily BECAUSE of Ledger's death! Albeit, he was a phenomenal actor, there's nothing that great about a silly Bathman movie. People are going that didn't know who he was out of curiosity.
Passerby (not verified)Passerby (not verified) said:
Most likely you're wrong. The majority of people are going to the movie because it is pretty much the only good movie that has come out this summer. I know I have not been impressed at all with 95% of the crap that has come out this summer.

I think he absolutely deserves it and would whether he'd died or not. He was fabulous in that role. He totally lost himself in that role. To me, there was nothing of Heath Ledger on that screen. Not a bit of his voice or tic or mannerism. It was all Joker. It's pretty amazing when an actor can pull something like that off.

Duh! Everyone who's seen the movie would agree with that one. Besides, if he doesn't win A LOT of people are going to be very ****.

You gotta get nominated AND outperform the other nominees before you can win, people.
Passerby (not verified)Passerby (not verified) said:
well if he doesn't win an oscar i'd be mad because it's crazyyy the way he got himself into this role. he always played such a different character in other movies.

I saw the movie and I have to say I spent the whole time thinking it was Heath and totally watching his performance. Not saying it was bad just the way people were talking about it I actually was worried that I was going to feel like he got into my head which he didnt. Good movie none the less.

He does not deserve it. This voting is based on emotions and pity... As for Maggie she is the worst in looks, fashion, personality and looks.
Passerby (not verified)Passerby (not verified) said:
Poor Bale his thunder stolen by Eckhart and Ledger thus his jealous and anger rampage. And poor Mags so hated by the public,Batfanboys and girls and fashion critics. No wonder she is banning the media for good because it hurts her feelings.

I just saw it last night and I most definitely agree with Maggie. I think my comment to my husband was along the lines of "Wow. Heath just neutered Jack with that role". Jack's Joker was amazing, but so goofy and infantile and tame compared to Heath's. The movie itself was amazing and Aaron Eckhart did an AMAZING job as Harvey Dent/won't give spoilers for those who don't know... BUT that being said: Heath stole the show and it has nothing to do with his death, but instead with the life that he gave the character. The least we can do for him and his family is recognize the amount of work and talent poured into this role and give him an Oscar.
