Diane Sawyer Partakes In A Very Fishy Beauty Trend

Good Morning America host Diane Sawyer recently tried out the weirdest beauty trend I've heard about in years: the fish pedicure. How do you think your tootsies will smell after this??:
Feet are immersed in a basin of warm water swarming with 100 tiny Turkish carp, known as 'doctor fish,' which nibble away at callouses and dead skin. After 15 minutes, the feet emerge baby-smooth."
Okay, maybe I'm a little old-fashioned about my beauty treatments, but this not only sounds painful, but also what about the hygienic factor?? That fishbowl mixture can't possibly be the cleanest, most pleasant-smelling concoction in the world!!
If you're brave enough to explore the new beauty frontier, the Virginia spa that started the treatment assures that every customer gets fresh water for the $45 treatment. As for the "fishy" aspect, at least it's a natural smell, right??

Rich people are stupid. They will do anything they consider exclusive. Ewwwww!

I think it sounds AWESOME! I used to love having pretty feet, before I was a stay at home mom. Now that I have NO time for pedicures, I would love a quick fix for my icky feet. And it is hilarious! It would certainly give me a conversation starter for social situations! COOL!

i would absolutely LOVE to try this!! for some reason it really intrigues me & i would be even more willing if i knew it worked. from what i have read it isnt painful at all.
Actually I think people should feel bad for the fish in this case. Imagine having only the dead skin of human feet to feed on. And what about contaminating their environment?
I heard about this before and apparently it's not only for the rich.
You shouldn't feel bad for the fish. We've read about it, and the fish only like dead skin. When they get to the skin that's alive, they stop eating.
I can't imagine ever doing this!

my girlfriend and I did it last weekend here in Virginia! It was interesting to say the least. I couldn't do it without giggling the whole time. I also couldn't look down and watch at first, but got brave and looked. It was a little creepy, but WOW it turned out amazing.
PS - got a cute little salmon colored polish afterwards too. we couldn't resist! :)
actually its not painful at all. they just tickle your feet.
they didn't smell at all.
you should try it, its a good experience

This sounds amazing! I would love to try it. It would tickle. And fish do not bite hard, so it definitely would not hurt at all. I don't know why it would be unhygenic either.

I heard/read somewhere that these fish don't have teeth so I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. I think it would be an interesting experience; I may try, but I'm not sure......I don't even know if its offered here

Unfortunately I can't get normal pedicures because my feet are so tickleish, it is unbearable for me. This might work if the fish are't too tickleish. No one can touch my feet without sending me into spasms, but maybe fish could.
Considering it's only $45 I would hardly consider this a "rich person" fad. I also wouldn't think it would hurt as much as tickle. And hey we have tons of microscopic bugs eating at our dead skin cells as we speak anyways so why not tiny fish?
painful? no!!! they are carp -- they don't have teeth. and besides, they don't chew off your foot, but only eat the dead skin. this treatment is an old turkish medical tradition. if it was dangerous or unhygenic, they would have stopped making use of it hundreds of years ago.

I would try it once...I imagine the fish probably feel better than a woman sanding off my calluses!! LOL!
Ah! Im a manicurist and my clients have been talking about this for weeks...now I know... lol
Maybe I should get some!
After reading these comments maybe I'll give it a try. ::gulp:: Wish me luck
Actually, the fish in Turkey are also used to treat psoriasis. A colleague of mine had tried everything before and was by then 90% covered in psoriasis and she says the fish worked. Well they did, I saw her body after the treament. She said it was a bit dull to be in the pool for all those hours - there are 3 sort of fish in 3 different phases, the nibblers, somthing else and the polishers - but it wasn't too bad and she even managed to study for an exam while in the water.
Anyway, psoriasis is a heart ache and I am leaving this info here, should anyone find it useful.

I had a co worker that suffered from psoriasis. She finally got accupuncture and it cleared it right up.
celebrities are idiots.

Uh, yawn... You may be on the wrong site here! :-)
i used to play soccer in college and a little semi-professional.. when it was all over i looked at my feet and the callouses were thick.. i took a sharp knife and cut them off.. then used a file and sanded them down.. what sort of callouses can these celebrities have that a simple a pedicure could not solve? maybe sawyer is attempting to mask her own distinct odor =)

i was flipping channels and they were doing this on the view, maybe last week? it looked really really interesting and fun to try! like it would be little tickles on your feetsies :) =(^_0)=
It has been proven to be unhygenic. Some of the fish are able to bite so hard that they can puncture the skin. Clients with diseases the can have their wounds openned by the fish and expose all other clients to potential health disorders. This is the best place hepatitis can spread.
