Avril Lavigne Is Too Sexy For Malayasia
Avril Lavigne has a tour stop planned for Malayasia and the country's Islamic party is not happy about it. Her music is too sexy for them!
"It is considered too sexy for us," explains Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a
representative of the country's Pan-Malaysian Islamic party. "It's not
good for viewers in Malaysia... We don't want our people, our
teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists,
artists that are good role models."
I'm wondering if they actually know who Avril is. This isn't the Pussycat Dolls wearing lingerie and singing about a guy's BEEP we're talking about here. This is "Hey, hey, you, you, I don't like your girlfriend..." She normally does her concerts wearing t-shirts and pants. Is she really too sexy for the culture?

Yeah, I can see that they would get that from her high heeled shoes and ultra revealing clothing, like in the above photo. I think they just don't like Sparkly things.

I figured this little broad was dead, haven't heard about her in forever. which is a good thing. I can't stand her foul mouth and the fact she spits at people. Just the site of her makes me angry
sight
Meh, they always like to make such a big deal out of it. This is just a very small minority though. Some musicians got the green light. (BEP, Gwen) Even Pussycats dolls got a pass. What the...? O_o
Maybe they think Avril is an 'ultra-hard-core-punk-rock musician'.
But if Avril is still performing, I still won't go and see it. :P
Ellie?
I don't blame them. Just listening to her "music" is offensive.

Avril is not sexy.
Avril lavigne is the 37th sexiest woman in the world in FHM.
Yeah right she's too sexy. They allowed scantily clothed Pussycat Dolls last year but of course the show's organisers were fined for allowing that. Maybe the real reason is because her concert's a mere few days (I think 3) away from Ramadhan...

avril? sexy? by what standards? why are they making up lies? they could just tell the truth: her music sucks and they don't want to listen to it.
Avril and sexy has never come up in a convesation that I can remember--sexy and rocker does not fit the little troll at all---Wow--she is desperate for an audience isn't she?

Do you not realize that the statement did NOT come from Avril's mouth? She never called herself "sexy." She is just trying to perform... there is nothing desperate about that. Isn't that what everyone in the music business wants?
This coming from a IGNORANT MORON that belittled fans that attended the Bonnaroo Music Festival which bands like Pearl Jam rocked the house...Didn't you call it a venue for selling drugs and dissed the fans that go to festivals like that?? You have no clue about real rock performers--ignorant little teeny bopper geek.
Well said Ten10! Ellie just got pwned!
Get over it! Some people like Avril Lavigne and some people don't!
sounds like your just old and like the singers that are already extinct

NOT SEXY .... they should get a dictionary so they can define sexy and they will not see a picture of Avril next to it
I think what the Malaysians may actually be responding is Avril's assertiveness. In a traditional Islamic culture, any sign of a woman's exercising free will or stating her opinions publicly is viewed with suspicion and disfavour.
Like other commenters, I agree Avril is hardly the sexiest girl out there, but who knows what Malay teenagers might find attractive?

Well as a female Muslim I can say that's completely untrue, women and men are considered equal in Islam (plus there have been several female Muslim leaders of nations). I can understand if the Malay government was wary of a Pussycat Dolls concert but I don't see how the gov. allowed that but doesn't want an Avril concert :S
Further proof that muslims are afraid of their own penises.
Wow, muslim bashing isn't needed

She's one of the most unsexy singers I can think of...and I mean that in all ways...
Avril lavigne was voted the 37th sexiest woman in the world in FHM.

they must just not like her, because she doesn't act too sexy.
Malaysia (not Malayasia) is actually one of the more liberal Muslim countries. Only about half of the population is ethnic Malay, the rest being mainly non-Muslim ethnic Chinese, and a smaller proportion of ethnic Indians. Even so, the government and media is controlled by Islamic interests and so impose a degree of restriction on the whole population as a result. There is a strong "anti-West" sentiment promoted by the government, with restrictions in the media on material which promotes supposedly Western values. They do not have a free press. In such a cultural climate, it would come as no surprise that Avril Lavigne, or any other young, western performer, would be deemed a poor role model. When my parents came to visit me and my husband, who is of Chinese-Malaysian origin, in Penang, my Mum had a Singaporian newspaper confiscated from her at the airport. This was a while ago now, but one wonders how they are able to control the access young people to have to material on the Internet. There is a lot about the way Malaysia is governed that is very wrong to us who have grown up in Western democracies, but even so, their culture must be respected ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CHOOSE TO VISIT THEIR COUNTRY. Also, don't judge a people by the government they have. I found ALL people in Malaysia to be friendly and exceptionally polite, and felt safe at all times. Maybe there are some things we in the West could learn from them??????
I am appalled by "some guy's" comment as I am a Muslim and I am from Singapore which is a neigbouring country of Malaysia. If no respect or understanding is given in the West regarding Islam, I wonder how Muslims in the West, put up with the discrimination in their own backyard.
Indeed, I do question the Malaysia's authorities decisions about who is deemed good enough to perform. Please bear in my mind that they do not do this to Western performers only, they too make sure neigbouring countries acts are "good and clean."
When Pussycat Dolls were over at Malaysia for the MTV Asia Awards, they respected the culture and the religion by wearing not too revealing clothings. Even Gwen Stefani altered her wadrobe as a sign of respect to the country. Therefore, I am sure if Avril discusses with the relevant authorities and a compromise is reached, I am sure she will be able to perform.
However, I can assure you that we, Asians, do not live in a rut. We too, are updated of current affiars and we too read celebrity blogs such as imnotobsessed, perezhilton, pinkisthenewblog, dlisted etc. We definitely do not appreciate comments which are hurtful and shallow.
So please to "some guy", please step out of your own bubble, as this world isn't yours alone.
Thank you.
Well said, Huda. "some guys" comment is so blatantly ignorant and racist that s/he has made her/himself look like a complete fool. I am the anonymous poster above your post, and even though I am not Asian, I have spent a lot of time living in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand with my Asian husband due to his work. Most of the negative comments on this subject come from people who have never experienced the richness and variety of Asian cultures. They judge purely on the values and hype of their own culture, forgetting that while they see it as their right to reject the values of other cultures, those same cultures have the right to reject the values of theirs! Yes, there are aspects of the way some countries in Asia are governed which are questionable and undemocratic, (and their own people are well aware of that), but the motives of many Western governments, particularly in the area of foreign policy, are not beyond criticism. If you choose to visit a country with values different to your own, you realize that you are a guest and respect the culture that exists there, even if you may not agree with certain aspects.
its Malaysia not Malayasia~~!!
and btw PCD performed in MTV Asia Awards who was held in Malaysia!
so now Avril considered too obscene?
*rolls eyes*

Respect works both ways, so I'm sure there is ground for a compromise. But censorship is rife in a lot of Asian countries and I actually feel sorry for all those people who can't enjoy their freedom as much as some of us do. Nobody should be told what they can and can't read, listen to, believe in etc.etc. Nobody owns a human being. Isn't it sad that this still happens in the year 2008?
So there is no censorship or manipulation of public opinion in the self-proclaimed flagship of Western democracy, the United States of America? Bush isn't exactly known for his forward thinking views on a lot of issues, and throughout his term in office, has restricted the rights of particular groups, often using HIS supposed religious beliefs as a reason. The influence of right wing Christian religious groups in current American politics is there for all to see. Then there is the more subtle moulding of public opinion and values by those who own the media, and by corporations who buy advertising time/and or space. While it is so easy to point the finger at countries with cultures that we perceive as being more restrictive with regards to personal freedom, sometimes we need to look in our own backyards and examine the ways our own thoughts and freedoms are manipulated by those in power. It may not be so obvious, but it's there!
i am muslim and she is not sexy to me. im from Turkey and a lot of celebrities came here for concert. j.lo, kylie minigue, sugababes, 50 cent, shakira, etc.... if you don't want to see just don't go to the concert. you are free for that. why do you send back a singer. ? she has some fans at Malazia (i guess) this is disrespect to them. if avril wears normal stage outfits, i never see wrong thing to that.
I'm from Malaysia. It really makes me sick when I hear these extremists' comments about how this is too sexy, that is too provocative, this is not god for the country, blah blah blah. It's really a load of BS, and I don't know why they cannot just keep their narrow-minded opinions to themselves.
When Gwen Stefani visited us (Yay for Gwen!!), there was much hoo-ha about how she dresses to sexily, and that her concert should be 'banned' coz of this. Yes, Gwen is a very sexy lady (IMHO), but she does NOT dress sexily (as in too revealing). Gimme a break! And then these people had to say she shouldn't come and all that crap. If you don't agree with the way she dresses or dances or sings, then don't go watch her! DUH!
The people who make these dumb comments are a minority, thank God!
If the Government, and whatever ministry is allowing these international stars come in to perform, just keep your opinions as to why they should not be allowed in to yourself, and shut up!
Don't spoil things for the rest of us, just coz your ideas on how people should and should not behave are screwed.
Makes me so mad when I read about things like this!!!
Seriously, the only people making noise is PAS Youth, a mere branch from the Islamic political party PAS.
Now that they've cancelled the concert :

I've lost all fucking respect for them.
I'm called a non-Muslim and non-bumiputra in Malaysia.
So they enjoy more rights than me, heck, I'm fine with that.
But to assert your SO CALLED ISLAMIC VALUES onto non-Muslims and say that you represent the views of Malaysian youths?
How do you even know that Avril is too sexy? You've seen her perform?
BLASPHEMOUS ACT I SHALL SAY!
Fuck you.
Don't forget who voted you into the government during the March 8 elections.
PAS Youth, revenge is on the way.
In all sorts of form.
You better be prepared.

Anonymus Aug 19, 2008 @ 09:31 pm - You are right with what you say, but the post was about Malaysia so why mention the censorship in other countries? Plus, I'm not American and only have a handful of American friends but more Asian friends. Hence my post. But since we are at the subject, the worst about the US for me is that there are people who don't believe in evolution. I will never understand those people.
