Anne Hathaway Gets Crafty

I know I might just be saying this right now, but I really want to try to do something homemade next year instead of buying a ton of presents for my family. I think it is such a great idea! A ribbon board seems doable... however Anne Hathaway admitted her gifts don't always come out as planned.
"I’m doing a lot of research right now on cool gifts for under $50. One year, actually for Christmas, I made everyone ribbon board… I made it, except mine was terrible because I couldn’t find the bunting and so it didn’t actually work with any of the cards. So I just actually included a little bag of festive thumb tacks.
"I’m a willful crafter, but I’m kind of a C student when it comes to the crafts. So I think like, everyone else, I’m going to be making a lot of gifts.
My family has a price cap on things and we always give money to charity, so I think we’re going to be focusing on that."
I LOVE the charity idea. That's keeping with the real spirit of the holiday isn't it?
Do you give gifts you make yourself? If so, what have you handed out in the past? I'm SO curious about this!

Good morning. For Christmas we've really only done the crafts that my son can give to his Grandma. That, and baking cookies to put in fancy tins. But my favorite thing to make is tissue paper flowers. I've got the Klutz book, and you can make some really exotic and beautiful bouquets. I also make them for my house....I have strands of white lights, and I'll wind the flower stems into them and hang them up when spring is coming. It's really pretty. I've always enjoyed dining al fresco where the trees are strung with white lights and that inspired me.

I am not that crafty but my MIL is. One year she made all of her daughters and daughters-in-law quilted casserole carriers. Since we do a lot of potlucks with friends and family, I use it all the time. I asked for another one for Christmas this year because one is not enough. Plus, because it is quilted it helps keep things warm. However, you need a sewing machine for this one.
Quilts are time-consuming to make but so personalized. I made one for my sister last year and everyone wanted me to make one for them. lol I didn't have time this year but hopefully next year I will be able to make some more.

I've given hand made gifts in the past, but oftentimes feel the recipient is not as excited about it as I am.

I make homemade gifts of Jingle Bell Sauce, fudge, cheeseballs and cajun-spiced pecans each year and pass them out to people like neighbors I don't really know that well, doctor's offices, the mailman, etc. In addition, our family pools our money together for a donation to charity. My husband and his siblings take turns in deciding the charity.

Every year I make calendars using Quark. I did it about 4 years ago and thought that that was it. But nope, the family all asked about it as time got closer the following year and I've been doing them yearly since. It's a great gift for family that you usually don't purchase things for like Aunts and Uncles and I know that my Grandmother prefers this over anything else that I could ever give her.

I made scarves for the women in my family. I learned to knit so I made my presents. They looked just like the ones I found in the stores. I kept the colors simple and each one was a solid color. I made them in cream, black, grey and red.
I LOVE the charity idea..

Never made anything but I think it is a great idea and it suits her perfectly. She just seems like such a humble down to earth girl.
