Stephen King Is Not A Twilight Fan

"Both Rowling and Meyer, they are speaking directly to young
people… The real difference is that JK Rowling is a terrific writer and
Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good. It's very clear that she's writing to a whole generation of girls
and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books.
It's exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly
threatening because it's not overtly sexual.A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the
vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just
flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all
the feelings that they are not ready to deal with yet."
-Stephen King on Stephenie Meyer and the Twilight series and J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter

WHOA!!! Stephen, tell us how you REALLY feel! Anyway, although I like the Twilight books, I kind of have to agree with him.....but on the other hand, I've read almost everything he's written, and I feel that his stories tend to get very complicated and downright silly and/or anti-climactic sometimes.
Same here. I like the books, but i agree to agree with him, it's not that well written. But somehow i like the stories, maybe because i'm a girl haha
Stephen King speaks the truth.

I actually don't like the Harry Potter books. I think they are a bit juvenile.

Yeah, he speaks the truth. And he wasn't mean. We all know Stephenie Meyer can't write. But it is the *story* that we love. When my girlfriend talked me into reading the Twilight series(over a year ago), she explained that the writing is terrible, but it is the story that catches you. She was right.
The Harry Potter Books are juvenile because they are written for children

Have you read them? Juvenile is the last word I'd ever use to describe them.

JK Rowling insisted that she never wrote Harry Potter FOR children, I have to say. She wrote it for her and just hoped it would please the readers. It is a very simple writing, I must admit, but I think some of the themes are universal and don't only attract children.
I am reading the first book and so far I like it. I don't like his books much, so just because he doesn't agree w/ her style doesn't mean she's a bad writer. He had his time already, so let her enjoy hers.

"overtyly sexual" why does everything have to be overtly sexual? I think there's room for different writers, besides who wouldn't love to write a book and get a movie deal-it's the American dream alive and well!
I agree with him as well. I never got past the first book. I'm 34, and may be too old for Twilight, but I didnt feel the love, didnt feel the characters, and really kept saying 'but if Edward is 400 years old and falls for a 17 year old, does that make him a pediphile?'. I also felt like we never got a back story on Bella - seriously, why are you so 'dark and depressed'.

I totally agree. I started reading the first of the series and absolutely hated it. I couldn't get past page 100. The book is so poorly written, with short, choppy sentences and repetitive use of words. Plus she drags on and on, page after page on how Edward hates Bella, then likes her again, then hates her, then likes her again, blah blah blah. Come on, get with the story already. It got so old, so fast and it completely lost my interest.
SOOOOO TRUE. Teenage girls are the easiest audience. Throw in a cute boy and the butterflies... they're sold.
Love Stephen King books and liked the Twilight series.I agree with Stephen that Stephanie isn't by any means a great writer. She does tend to write messy and flawed but I didn't really mind the books. I'm just happy to see (teens) picking up a book instead of reading magazines!!
I totally agree.

agreed Mr. King

here here!
completely. it was the story that kept me reading the books, definitely not the admittedly quite amateur writing style.

Her writing style is intensely amateurish. But if it weren't she wouldn't have as many young fans who don't read good literature but are excited to have something exciting to read.
JK Rowling is a far superior writer. One cannot create a completely different universe with little or no help from an existing world has to be skilled in using things OTHER than adjectives or repeating the same ones. I must say, I am not annoyed she ever wrote the stories because theyre escapist and nice but why couldn't she improve on her writing in the latter books? When you have that kind of following, I think you have a little bit of responsibility to improve on your quality of writing. Stephen King isn't nasty, hes dead on. He understands the value of plot driven books vs. good writing accompanied by original plots.

She is an extremely amateurish writer, but doesn't that beg the question of why the publishing company didn't help her make them better? They have editors on staff for a reason. Strong editorial guidance and a lot of rewriting would have made the books a lot better, without losing the story that has won over so many readers. Obviously the publishing company was just looking to make a quick buck. Sad to think that some young readers (and older ones, too, probably), will believe this is quality writing.

Well said. I remember some passages that were clunky and there were more than a few grammatical errors. I wish her editors & publishers had supported her more fully instead of just seeing dollar signs.
I'm not hating on Stephenie, quite the contrary. When I first read the series, I read it repeatedly for two months, which ended up being six times in a row. (For the record, I do the same thing with a lot of other books/series. I'm just a weirdo like that.) Clearly, it's appealing enough to me that I can overlook the unskilled writing. LOL

Lara Jane, ditto to everything you just said.
I agree, the writing isn't the best and there are a lot of grammatical errors. But, just like you, the story was enough for me that I was happily able to overlook everything else and read the books...a few times, haha!
Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff :)

And on another note....Robert Pattinson is distractingly sexy in that picture.
Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff :)
I read twilight because it was such an easy reading and you don't really have to think. It's hard to read anything that is complicated when you have two small children. I've never read any Rowling's books so I really can't judge at this time.
This was the first time she had ever written a book, people! The series alone is a GREAT feat! She started writing from a dream she had, she even said on Ellen that she had to Google how to write a book. Cut the lady some slack... obviously you all put money in her pocket for at least buying the first copy to read and pick apart.
I have read and own all four of her books, and honestly, I loved them! The writing doesn't have to be too deep and filled with craploads of big, sophisticated words.. Stephen King, honestly, you wrote Pet Cemetary.. give Stephanie a break. He got hit by a car once, didn't he? Maybe he should do that again..
The plot of the series is what catches you. For people here to say they didn't even get past the 100th page, honestly, who are you to judge? Try making it to the end of the first damn book before you toss in your two cents.
wow now this is the teenager mind we are scared of. stop being hateful man, the guy is right. meyer has nothing to compare. i have read it all and story is great for teenagers, it catches you completely. but the themes and style is just really bad.i am not completely okay with king's style either, it is way too dark for me sometimes but at least he knows about dreams and writing stuff. and he is obviusly right.
I completely agree with you! It's horrible that people are so negative about her writing. Give her a break, it's her first book and it was amazingly successful! Plus, not only teens like it! I know plenty of grown women who love the series, including myself!
Hundreds of pages of teenage angst and moping - these books were very dreary!

Stephanie writes a loves story that appeals to girls and women.
Stephen King is a sick psycho who writes horrifying books. I doubt he's read Twilight or The Harry Potter series, so back off. Each to their own.

He's a psycho for writing horror stories?! Am I a psycho for reading them? Is everyone who's ever gone to see a horror movie a psycho? Also, I'd bet a million dollars that he HAS read Twilight and Potter. He wouldn't be able to accurately comment on the different writing styles of them if he hadn't.

Stephen King is an amazing writer & I like him, but in response to his comment, I have say, "Thanks Capt. Obvious". The majority of people & even teens who read the Twilight series admit its a guilty pleasure. I liken the writing quality to a simple romance novel, a fluffy beach read. Clearly, Meyers isnt a literary genius, but the story had lots of people hooked. Her concept was fabulous... the delivery, not so good.
oh please...people, writers and critics especially, get way too caught up in whether it's great writing or not. who cares?! sometimes it's just a great story. it doesn't have to be a literary genius to be good.

THANK YOU!! He is SO right! I hate it when people even compare JK Rowling and Meyer. While JK Rowling is incredible, Meyer is just writing a 'love' story that will be forgotten within the next 3 years.
I totally agree with SK--Rowling is a top-notch author. Not a genius, mind you, and not a Great Literary Mind. BUT... Meyer is a total hack whose writing is clunky, awkward, full of groaners and cliches. Not to mention completely terrible when it comes to presenting young women with strong, wise female characters. Read Ursula LeGuin or Madeleine L'Engle instead!
Oh come on guys, the Twilight story is crap ! Read some real breathtaking vampire stories ! Read Laurell. K Hamilton's Anita Blake, people, open your eyes and read ! There's so much better outside than this best-selling monstrosity !
And for the record, I'm a girl and I'm sixteen... I just have READ before Stephenie Meyer published her insult to literature.
The plot, the writing... it's all so wrong.
Harry Potter was JK Rowling's first work too. and while the first two or three HP books may be a BIT juvenile (the first two esp) the rest absolutely aren't. Goblet of Fire onwards they took on a darker tone. The Harry Potter books are a masterpiece, an example of excellent writing and a universal message that will be cherished by generations. I have to agree with Stephen King because I was sorely disappointed by Meyer's Twilight books. New Moon onwards esp they were awful. The mess she made with Jacob was ridiculous, and the characters Bella and Edward began to irritate me to no end-esp Edward acting like Bella's supreme protector and guardian and her being the damsel of distress always. And Breaking Dawn was just a far-fetched, horrific piece of writing.
I think stephanies writing is good and whether he likes it or not i am going to continue readind it. as he pointed out the audience is girls (sorry to guys who like the book) and so his opinion really shouldn't matter. He shouldn't talk down at her, it just makes him look jealous that she topped him. His books are probably very good, but personally they arn't my style, just like apparently steph's isn't his.
A lesson i think he needs to learn, true confidence is when your proud enough of what you've done not to be worried about the opinions of others.

i am sorry but if you really think that stephen king is jelous of meyer you should really, really think about it again. for a second time. or third.fourth. fifth? yes, probably.
people make me really sad sometimes.
I have read all of the Harry Potter books and all of the Twilight books.
For a while, I was just obsessed with Harry Potter, until a friend convinced me that the world of Twilight was calling for me. I'm thankful to her for the info because I read all 4 books in the Twilight series in under a week and I've never looked back. Twilight is without a doubt, my favorite series ever.
I'm not going to critique either writer because I fully enjoyed the books of both series. Instead, I will just say thank you to both J.K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer for writing stories that give people like myself something to look forward to :) It may be fiction, but its delicious fiction.
