Nicole Richie Confesses Brazilian Blow Dry As Her Styling Secret

Nicole Richie Confesses Brazilian Blow Dry As Her Styling Secret

Do you have over-processed, highlighted, damaged and dry hair? What - that's just me?

I'm sure a celebrity could relate to over-styled hair. In fact, they would be a great person to ask about how to remedy it considering they're photographed walking in and out of salons almost every weekend.

Nicole Richie took to her Twitter account to recommend "Brazilian Blow Dry" after a fan asked what she does to maintain her hair.

I googled.

This treatment is known as a progressive blow-dry, or “escova progressive” in Brazil where it originates. In the US, it has been available for less than a year.
The treatment lasts anywhere from six weeks to several months, and can cost from $150 to $600. The solution is made of keratin, which is a protein similar to that found in human hair. Finally, the formula is sealed onto the hair shaft using a hot iron, where it traps in moisture and adds a glossy finish.

That's funny because my hair stylist keeps trying to get me to do this. But he called it mane-tamer? Both use Keratin and the process is exactly the same. Perhaps I should give it a go?

Anyone else try this method?

I actually relax my hair and when the keratine treatment first came out my hair stylist told me about this as a replacement for this stupid relaxing process. that i been going thru for so long since my hair is not a "good hair" i finally did it and the first time around is not as silky and soft because the treatment (keratine) is left on your hair till the next time when they wash it out again the hair is like butter and is so great that i no longer need to do this relaxing bull$hit just because is so soft and shiny. it is a little pricy but is worth every dollar i've been doing it for a couple of months now and my hair has change dramatically. i paid $500 because i wanted to use only the best Keratine product and i do not regret it one bit like i said is worth every dime. i highly recomend this to any one that has a very curly hair and wants to have it staight for a long period of time and dont want to deal with the blow dryer every day.

That's the problem ALL your post have misspellings, bad grammar and ghetto English. Just because this is a gossip site doesn't mean you lax on your skills; you are the loser not the other posters. I bet you were busy giving out bl*wjobs and not paying attention in class. At least make the effort and try, you don't even try!

Ghetto english? Don't you mean Black English Diction? She may need to work on her grammar, but you don't need to judge someone like that.

I have read good reviews about this process. it is supposedly good.

I would love to have gorgeous hair like Nicole Richie and Jennifer Aniston - but I don't have their budget and I hate going to the hairdressers. I think the last time I visited a hair salon was about 10 years ago!

If her hair is a testament to the process then I don't see the worth in it. Her hair always seems pretty ratty to me. Maybe its what she does after the procedure but I'd need someone else to convince me.

First sorry for my english! "Escova progressive" is very popular here in Brazil a long time ago, but it's not a treatment to damage and dry hair.
We use to keep the hair straight, instead of going every week to salons to do blow dry, we do "escova progressiva" and during same months the hair looks like you have just done blow dry.
It's for girls who have curly or wavy hair to keep them straight.

This treatment works well but is bad for your hair. It contains keratin, yes, but the active ingredient is FORMALDEHYDE. Yuck.

You can find formaldehyde free versions. We offer this at my hair salon Gielly Green in London. Google it.

lololol Yes, putting excessive heat into your hair is the best thing ever! Especially when you APPLY "similar" proteins into your hair as if they're going to bind to your hair and make it all better. Totally worth the hundreds of dollars it costs... totally. Lol... And who wouldn't want their hair to look like Nicole's? I mean look at that soft, ratty, overprocessed mess. Lovely. =^_^=

I love this treatment.

We ROCK!

A guy name Alan , did my hair when I was in NY, Alan it's a fun Brazilian hairdresser. inexpensive, and he uses chocolate . My hair last 5 months!
He did in his house....Maybe he is in a Salon now...

I agree with the posters who say this is not a hair treatment , but rather a straightening technique. It is used for people with very curly/wavy hair so you do not have to damage the hair by using straightening techniques daily. A friend from Brasil is the one who told me about this treatment---she says it is NOT used for helping damaged/dry hair and only worth the money if you have curly hair.
Just my two cents.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I've had it done as I have really thick & coarse hair, but it isn't very curly. Unlike the Yuko hair straightening treatment (which makes it super straight), this Brazilian technique just makes it appear smoother and more under control. It decreases the frizz and makes my thick hair much more manageable.

When Nicole referred to it being for dry and damaged hair, I think she meant that it can help damaged hair to look more sleek and less frizzy. It won't cure dryness or damage, but it does make it look a little better. It lasts 2-3 months, depending on your hair type and how often you wash it. For me, I went from having blow drys once or twice a week to blow drying it myself. So for me it was worth the money.

I've gotten this, but it was supposed to be used as a straightening treatment. I wasn't happy with the results. I had used an anti-curl treatment previously and had liked it better; when it was curly, my hair looked nicer. The brazilian was too expensive and only last half the time of the anti-curl. That's just me, though.

The above poster is correct about the formaldehyde in the treatment and there has been controversy over the safety of the "escova progressive." Even if it works as advertised, is it really worth the potentially toxic side effects? I say no (especially if pregnant like she is).

Hi Vera,
I actually have done this product, when it just came out. cause my husband is a hair dresser and its called Brazilian Kertatin Treatment, and its great it maintains frizziness, but your hair will not be stick straight just more tamed.

Gisela Gisela said:

There is nothing wrong with natural curly and wavy hair. Women have been brainwashed into believing that straight hair is "good" and curly hair is "bad". Everyone wants to look the same, there's no uniqueness anymore.

I agree with Gisela, actually. My roommate has super curly hair and manages it well, and it's gorgeous. She gets compliments on it all the time... maybe it's time people embrace their curls rather than shell out hundreds to "fix" them.

Yeah. Im from Brazil and its very common here. Most brazilian girls have curly hairs and they dont like it. So heres theres lots of treatments to let the hair straight. But i think curls are beautiful!

I'm from Brazil too. It is called "escova progressiva" and not "progressive". Anyway, I blow dry my hair every day and I have considered doing this several times. There are dozens kinds of "escova progressiva" here. First we had Japanese, then one from Morocco, then a chocolate one, a strawberry, etc...
As someone said before it is not a treatment and won't do any magic (apart from straightening). Actually, you might end up losing a lot of hair, and that is the main reason why I never did it. I have seen some people with very stiff hair as a consequence of many and many "escovas progressivas". Another thing is that even after doing it, you still have to blow dry your hair to make it shiny, otherwise it will look very opaque.
If you really hate your curls and use a lot of straitening iron, I think it is a good idea because you will be avoiding more damage than causing.
I never did it because I do not have much hair and I can’t risk losing it. Also, it doesn’t take me more than 5 minutes for me to blow dry it and I would have to keep doing it anyway…
If you are thinking about trying, ask for a test in a small part of you head to make sure you won’t end up losing most of your newly straightened hair.
Also, out of curiosity, it is not as expensive here. You can get a good one done for $100.

I did the mane tamer! I was told that it would eliminate the frizz but not all of the curl. My hair is super curly and at first it seemed to help but really I don't think it did much for me. I'm done spending so much to get rid of the curls, I'll just keep blow drying!

PsychDoc PsychDoc said:

I've heard of this process but I opted for the not-so-new Japanese hair straightening. It's permanent and probably more damaging for the hair, but I don't regret doing it at all. I spent $150 in NYC to get it done, and ever since I did it last September, I've never had to use a flat iron. I barely even use a blow dryer because it dries naturally the way it would look if I styled it. It's like having Jennifer Aniston hair everyday without any of the effort. I love it. You cannot have bleached hair however, because it might be too damaging. Tinting and coloring is okay- the people who did my hair were concerned about my blonde highlights even though I insisted I'm a natural blonde and I had only a tint in my hair. If you do this, make sure you go somewhere that is cautious, it's for your benefit. Straight hair, wavy hair, curls- they're all beautiful. There's usually one that suits each of us best though, so whatever makes you happy...

Yes, I've worked in 2 salons and this is what you need! The Keratin treatment actually fills in the "holes" of your hair where excessive wax and other chemicals from product and color over time can create damage. In filling them with the Keratin, they are actually conditioned and it creates a much sleeker look. The downside is, most salons charge more for that (I live in Houston, Texas) than the Google search led on to...Sometimes up to $1,000. Also, a lot of salons claim to have treatments in a similar vain but they're not the same, so always remember when you want the Brazilian treatment to specify KERATIN! Lol ;-)

I have had this done several times. The first time it is done it will help de-frizz your hair and will make your hair less curly and more managable. if you get it done again within a couple months your hair will get even straighter. To be honest it has made my hair shinier, very straight and managable. I used to have very very thick curls. I now only do it about once or twice a year. The only catch is that if you get this done, your hair will get greasier faster. so youll have to wash everyday. i do think results will vary obviously depending on the quality of the product. its becoming pretty popular which of course will lead to fakes and cheaper versions. That said, i get it done for 120 a session. not bad at all compared to prices i've heard... and thats in miami.

The Brazilian Blowout BRAND NAME PRODUCT/service is FORMALDEHYDE-FREE but gets a bad rap because it is grouped in with other "Brazilian style" treatments. my advice is to really interview your stylist and research what you are getting. There is a lot of information on the topic at my website www.jordanalorraine.com :)

I think it is really funny that the person who values the English language so much as to diss someone over their sklls on a beauty site, doesn't realise that when a word starts with a vowel then the article turns from a into an.
Thant's right Gisela, I think what you meant to write was "invest all that money in an English grammar class.
