Angelina Jolie Lands Role In Possible New Franchise

Angelina Jolie Lands Role In Possible New Franchise

Angelina Jolie is at her best when she's kicking butt and solving mysteries in action/thriller type movies. So it's no surprise that she is teaming up with one of the biggest female authors out there, Patricia Cornwell, in hopes of creating a new franchise called, 'Scarpetta.'

The Scarpetta series currently has 16 books in it, but sort of like the Bourne franchise, the movies won't be written after a specific book. Angelina will simply be cast as the main character in the series, medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Once Jolie sparked to the series, months of negotiations followed between ICM and Fox 2000's Elizabeth Gabler and Carla Hacken, because Cornwell was so protective of her literary property. The deal finally came together after Jolie and Kosinski met with the author and found common ground on the creative direction of the feature adaptation.

When Angelina Jolie comes knocking, you don't say no. :)

Has anyone read any of these books, and if so, what do you think of Angelina as Dr.Kay Scarpetta?

She is nowhere near what I have pictured as Kay Scarpetta over the years. It's definitely not an action role, so to say that is a stretch. It would be one of her typical intense characters. Thank goodness she doesn't try to stretch to do light-hearted. Don't think she'd be good at that. Even her cartoon roles are intense.

I love the Scarpetta books. But I always imagined someone a bit older because they are not really action action books. But I really like the books and hopefully she can do a good job.

so much for taking a break and spending time with the kids....

Oh shut up. You don't know anything about her schedule. I'm not even a fan of hers but YOU DO NOT KNOW HER!

I love these books! And I love Angelina, but Kay Scarpetta is supposedly a frumpy medical examiner from Miami.. quite a stretch, but I'm sure she'll pull it off. This actually makes me happy, unlike the Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon thing.. don't even get me started on that one!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Not sure if you read the books but Kay is always described as blond, curvy, and attractive.

I definitely don't imagine her as Scarpetta. I haven't read the books in years but wasn't Scarpetta blonde? I don't get the impression she's supposed to be a sex bomb exactly. Attractive yes, but Angelina Jolie? No.
Why must the same actors be used in EVERYTHING?!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

in the books she's described as 'handsome', so I can sort of see her playing that.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I never read the book but it sound like a great Idea. I love Angie and I do belelive she is a good actress who can play any role.

I've read ALL the books (and devour every new Cornwell when it comes out) since she published her first Scarpetta novel. (I'm actually going through and re-reading her books for the 3rd time.)

Love Angie, but it will be interesting to see her as Kay Scarpetta (who in the books, is an ash-blonde). She's not a "physical" person as a "mental" person, by no means frumpy (sorry 'brody') or a wallflower. If you want a great suspenseful read, read her first two books "Postmoretem" and "Body of Evidence". They're wonderful!

Hmm, wonder who will play Wesley Benton & Marino...and her niece Lucy! If Cornwell's involved, she'll make sure it works or it won't happen. This will be great to watch unfold! :)

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Must agree with the Cornwell fan. I've read all the books and can't see Angie in this role. Kay Scarpetta is blonde, brainy and methodical. She leaves the action stuff to others. Personally Angie would make a better Lucy, although she's a bit old for that character. How about Brad Pitt has Wesley Benton???

Can't wait to see how Hollywood handles this character and her sidekicks

Anonymous Anonymous said:

NO NO NO NO!!!!!! Jolie should NOT be playing Scarpetta!!!! I have read all of the books & she doesn't suit the character......I think she is a good actress, but Scarpetta is supposed to be blonde, & a bit older than Jolie.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Anyone ever hear of a wig?? I don't think being blonde will be a big obstacle :)

"Blonde" isn't the issue. She's also about 12 years too young and doesn't suit the role. But otherwise, she's perfect! LOL

As a huge fan of the Scarpetta series, I agree with "Ha", my mental image of Kay Scarpetta is very similar to the author, Patricia Cornwell, and I have a hard time accepting Angie as Scarpetta.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I too am a big Scarpetta fan and usually re-read the better earlier novels while awaiting a new one.... Jolie in this role would be a HUGE mistake. Scarpetta is short, very smart and has short blonde hair. Someone like Jodie Foster or Naomi Watts would be a much better choice, hell even Leslie Hendrix (ME on Law and Order) would be a more believeable fit.

It will be interesting to see the Wesley and Marino choices. I usually picture a cleaned up, suited up Viggo Mortenson or a younger Ed Harris for Wesley and the guy who played the grumpy cop in Beverly Hills Cop for Marino.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Wow, your choices for Marino & Wesley are dead on....and I definitely agree with your suggestions for Kay......I can't even IMAGINE Jolie in the Scarpetta role.....

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Horrible horrible casting. Scarpetta is a healthy eater who loves cooking, Angelina is way too skinny. Plus, it will be ANGELINA JOLIE THE MOVIE STAR playing Scarpetta, not Scarpetta. Angelina is too famous to assume a role like this and she is nothing like the character in the books. Ugh.

It's hilarious all the Angelina fans defending her after she said she would take a break after Salt and yet, here she is lining up roles again. Huh.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Haters are so stupid. Nowhere does this story say shooting starts tomorrow. There's no script, cast, etc. They just got the rights. Who knows if the movie will even be made. Besides Angelina said 1 year off not 10.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I expect that non-fans will scream "she lied about taking time off to be with her kids" when in fact she is holding true to her statement(s). She was off for 14-15 months in between Changeling and Salt and this film, if it does evolve, will take at least a year to begin production. She said she wanted to do one film a year, then one every three years. If this is successful she will be able to keep to that schedule. Think the only other thing she has lined up is to reprise her role in Kung Fu Panda. Don't think cartoon voice overs take more than a few weeks. Wish the rumors about Sin City 2 were true, think she'd be great in the Ava Lord role, but then the haters would start screaming "liar" again. I know how much disappointment they feel, though, I wish Pitt's EX would take a very long holiday from the formulaic romcoms she pumps out (about 4 every year, isn't it?)

I've always pictured Marg Helgenberger from CSI in that role. I think she would be a much better choice. I'll be interested to see how this all works out though. I'm actually more curious about who they would cast as Scarpetta's niece, Lucy.

I too think that someone like Naomi Watts would be more appropriate for the character. . . you want someone attractive, but not someone who oozes sexuality.

Patricia Cornwell is my all time favorite author, I own and have read every single one of her books and I think this is a HORRIBLE casting choice. She is nothing like Dr. Kay Scarpetta. I have been dying for this series to be made into movies, but if she is portraying Dr. Scarpetta I doubt I will be watching them .

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Now I want to read these books! Based on what people are describing as the main character, maybe Naomi Watts?? Love her. Love Angelina too, so I'm sure if they move forward, then she'll rock it!!

I too have read all the Scarpetta novels, and I always picture Kay to look more like the author. I also read Kathy Reichs. Her books are very similar in the forensic department. The female lead in Bones is supposed to be based on her and the actress bears no resemblance at all to the author. And it doesn't matter who plays the character as long as it is done well and the plot is good.

The series isn't butt-kicking, action type books. They're drama/suspense like Seven and Silence of the Lambs. I can't picture Angelina in this role. I agree that I always pictured Kay as looking like the author or Jodie Foster.

Why are people going off the deep end about Angelina not taking time off? I read about this story on another blog and they said they are still coming to terms for the rights. Things can fall through or take a long time to negotiate. Even if things came together right this second, there's no script. That takes a long time to develope especially since they plan to deviate from the books. Filming wouldn't even start for at least a year.

Well, if that's the case then maybe by the time they shoot AJ would be a little more age-appropriate. But still, I just don't see her as fitting the way some others would.

I always Christine Lahti would make a good Scarpetta. Angelina Jolie in this role is laughable. Perhaps she could play Lucy. No way should Brad Pitt play Benton. I might like to see Chris Noth as Benton, but I'd have to think about that some more.
