A Different Interpretation Of The Fairy Tale Princess

A Different Interpretation Of The Fairy Tale Princess

And they lived happily ever after...

Well, not always!

Someone decided that Disney's interpretation of princess themed stories was not always accurate.  To rectify this, they staged what it would really be like for these gals if they lived in the real world.

The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney's Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess.

As a young girl, growing up abroad, I was not exposed to Fairy tales. These new discoveries lead to my fascination with the origins of Fairy tales. I explored the original brothers Grimm's stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney's perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

War, a husband who doesn't help out, death, addicted to surgery, battling cancer, an eating addiction - all very real concepts. What do you this about the photo spread? I get that they are trying to be artistic and many woman find issues with the concept that a man always has to save the woman...

But when my daughter accidentally saw this picture, she got very sad and asked me what was wrong with Snow White.  I don't think we should take anything away from our kids and this is erasing some of the magic. Just a thought...

This is disgusting. why do you want to post something as disturbing and cruel as this?? waoooo it must be a very slow monday. this site has become a joke and a sarcastic, delucional place to blog. i'm not trying to ignore the fact that love stories don't always have happy the ending, but come on a girl have the right to dream while they can and still innocent to all the crap that's going on in this world. of course is our job as mothers to let them know as they grow up that is not always the case. but have we become so detached from the sweet and amazing world of kids that now we gonna take this from them and turn them (kids) into unsensitive version of this people who think and do such things?? what a shame that this site is posting this disturbing crap.

Well obviously these photos aren't meant for kids. The photographer talks about her own fascination with fairy tales. She never says whether she will show them to her 3-year old or not. I mean, I'm pretty sure Jenna Jameson won't show her work to her kids. The photographer's right about Disney sugarcoating everything. I mean, watch the Little Mermaid and then read the original story by H.C. Andersen. You keep talking about how these photos will change little girls. Well little girls shouldn't look at 'em!

Now personally I think the photos are great. I loved fairy tales and Disney as a child and I still do. But I always wondered what would happen to the princesses if they lived in the real world.

hi, i don't want to start a discussion but disney HAS CHANGED what fairy tales originally were: cruel, disturbing stories with a wagging finger and a full-of-moral and really not always happy ending. goldstein (the photographer) is imo returning to the more traditional ways of fairy tales rather than showing us s.th. new.
it's contemporary which some might see as a paradox to fairy tales and thus feel "weird" or "disturbing".

Bravo. The purpose of the nursery tale is to FRIGHTEN CHILDREN and prevent them from doing something stupid. Disney does not create nursery tales. They create wish-fulfillments and fantasies. Judging by the responses of some of the adults here, these fantasies can indeed get under the skin, leading to unrealistic interpretations of the world.

That said, I would not show these pictures to a young child. I wouldn't play Marilyn Manson for them either, even though he's a genius. Not all art is created for children. Real art is created for adults.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I think the pictures are brilliant. They're ment as art for adults, not something that we need to teach/show our children. It's nice to see a relatively realistic depiction of the fairy tale princesses.

Idgaf, this is a good idea - kind of overdone, it's not the 1st time someone picks up a fairy tale & gives it a nowadays twist - but the execution is really poor. Not the theme, but the photos are just plain bad. The Cinderella one isn't posted here, but her dress looks really cheap & tacky, straight from the cheap masks store. They could have put a little effort to bring some quality to this photos.

And, needless to say, this isn't meant for kids to view. Obviously.

Realistic?? yeah because you propably are all of this combine. you are a unhappy piece of s.h.i.t who wishes had everything done to her body to feel better about yourself. and your husband/boyfriend/pimp does not give a f.u.c.k about your dumbass and play you all the time. what you should do is better your life since you think this is super ok.

As far as art goes I think it's an interesting twist and unique idea. I just find it hard to accept the term "interpretation" for what she has done. No where in the stories can you come up with these outcomes in any twisted manner. What she has done is put them in real life situations; it has nothing to do with interpreting the stories. She took their physical characteristics and descriptions and played off of them. Like my sister said, art can be edgy and make people uncomfortable-but everyone is taking these pieces a little too seriously. Just look at it for what it is: art.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Well these are far more reality that any "reality show" out there. I like the idea of it, but fairy tales are meant to be just that. We spend too much time trying to teach our kids to think and grow-up and forget to just let them be kids - imagination and fantasy are wonderful for children and the developing mind. Let's not take that away from them. They will get their reality soon enough.

The people that are taking this too serious. Fairytales have never truely been happy stories. Cindrella's sister gets the prince and it's from choping off her toes to fit into the shoe. When I have children I will not tell them the disney sugar-choated stories. They are fun watch but to tell a little kid that it's possible to happy is completely false hope.

I think this is pretty interesting. Is the one in the yellow dress Belle from Beauty and the Beast? If so, that's upsetting. :(

Anonymous Anonymous said:

this is just a more realistic interpretation for us adults, maybe it'd be better to introduce the concepts to children first before having their fairy tale world suddenly obliterated.
positivity and optimism are important values to instill in children, but the disney version where no bad thing is allowed to happen to good people may not be appropriate. because the truth is, bad things do happen to good people. the point is that there is beauty and strength to be found such instances.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

You have no idea of what your talking about. you sound so damm idiotic and ignorant. grow up and call it for what it is CHEAP and HORRID.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Listen Vera - Disney isn't real for one, and the stories that they produce are in fact bad for children. Their stories are male-dominated - look at Beauty and the Beast! The beast actually ASSAULTS belle... and locks her in a tower. Is that a good message? NO!

Disney sends bad messages to children. These pictures just help prove that point.

Why can't they just leave well enough alone? Disney is just a fantasy for kids that's it, just a fantasy! With all the horrible things that are awaiting our children when they grow up whay can't we just let them enjoy themselves now with harmless fantasies? Disney hasn't caused kids to have issues.. Our messed up society has already taken care of that.

Anyway the pictures should have better quality, but I think they are interesting.
And this is obviously for adults, you are not going to make children look at Belle doing plastic surgery.
And kids can still have their fairy tales anyway, nobody is saying that they can't have it. They are just using the Disney Princesses to show some real life problems.
