Fact Or Fiction: Robert Pattinson Is Not A Good Tipper

Fact Or Fiction: Robert Pattinson Is Not A Good Tipper

Perhaps it was all the money he had?

OK! Magazine has a source who claims Robert Pattinson isn't the greatest tipper. While hanging out with some friends grabbing a bite to eat, the actor picked up the $350 check. Nice thing to do right? Well, the rumor is Rob only left $50 as a tip. That's just shy of the 15% mark.

Is it wrong to expect actors to give a bit more to waiters? Or should they act like everyone else?

Assuming this story is even true right! What do you think? Fact or Fiction?

My Beef Is..

Perhaps the service sucked! Anyone think of that?

Waitresses/waiters anymore "expect" 20% even if the service is horrible. I had to HUSTLE back in the day...any more, the service is shot and they still make tips.

I am one of those people who still tip on service - ESPECIALLY because I've worked in the industry and also because of the economy. People are always looking for handouts for a half-assed job.

..and perhaps the service was good - but people are more inclined to leave more if the service rocked.

i waitress'ed my way through college, and ALWAYS leave 20%. if the service sucks talk to the manager but waitstaff makes zilch. there were weeks when my "paycheck" was less than a dollar, and if poor tippers were in it felt like my income was as well.
just my 2cents.

btw $50 is not a lot of money.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

I agree. 20% is the customary tip to leave. And anyway, didn't he just say he doesn't care about money in an interview?

Anonymous Anonymous said:

If he had only left 5 I would agree that he is not a great tipper but he left 50 bucks! That is more than most people will make in an hour! I think this is pretty ridiculous.

Exactly. $50 is a lot. ;)

It's doesn't matter who you are that is a horrible tip, but like Anonymous above said, it could have been horrible service and therefore an appropriate tip.

Hellooooooooo, guys. He left $50! That is pretty generous if you ask me. he just spent $350 and a $50 tip. That seems like a lot of money for 1 hour. I would have been happy if he left $20. You guys gotta calm down.

I remember being a waitress, and this couple would come in at least 3 times a week. No matter what they ordered, they always only left $3, whether it was me serving the, or someone else. Drove me crazy! How dare you spend over $40, and only leave $3? Over an hour of serving them, making sure they had everything they needed, refills, bringing food back, and so forth and so on, and $3. Though I do agree, that if you do a crappy job, you get a crappy tip.

I also remember going to a restaurant, with a group of friends, and the waitress was so nasty, huffing and puffing when she saw our table, dropping our plates down, and snarled "is there anything ELSE?", not coming by to offer refills, giving us wrong items, not asking my friend how he wanted his steak done, and then giving attitude when he asked fr it medium rare, not giving us a chance to say our side options, and giving us a tude for that. There was 8 of us, and 6 of us either used to work, or were working, as waiters or waitresses at the time, so for us, not leaving a tip, knowing what servers have to go through, tells you about how bad her serving us was. When we were leaving, she was started to talk loudly how we didn't leave a tip. I walked up to her and told her that if I served a group of people at my job, like she did, I would be grateful not to have my manager fire me. I showed her my pin, and my apron, which were in my purse, and she was so embarrassed, I thought she was going to melt and sink into a crack!

I was just about to say that! There isn't a big tipping culture in the UK like there is in the US. I got so confused when I was in the US when I had to tip!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

i agree here, im in NZ and it is way different again. we dont have to tip at all in places if we dont want to. peps usually leave tips if the services is good, but we dont really rely on tips here. its not much fun. and also $50 bucks would be a large tip here, how could you seriously complain about getting money like that, and why would you care you got to serve Rob.

My family from Europe was completely astounded as to how much we tip in the US because waiters/waitresses in Europe make at a good wage. But in the US, as per what my waitressing friends have told me, they usually make less than the minimum wage so they rely on the tips a lot. Nevertheless, if service is sucky no one deserves a tip. So maybe $50 was a good tip in this instance..."Good Victory"

Okay, I used to wait tables at a yacht club and people would come in ALL THE TIME and spend hundreds. I was lucky to get $20. Fifty is FINE for that. People need to stop being so selfish. Also, consider the fact that he probably eats out a LOT, being away from home, and can't afford to leave a hundred dollar tip everytime.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

In the UK we don't tip. We normally just leave the change if were paying by cash, and if we pay by card we leave £5 or so.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Brits don't tend to tip much - 10% is normal. We actually have sections in our guidebooks when we travel that explain the whole tipping thing to us. Don't give him a hard time, he's got this whole new culture to get used to

Anonymous Anonymous said:

who knows whether it's true or not. who cares. either way, what makes you think they should give more?

Jack Jack said:

I'd be surprised if the service wasn't great since everyone knows who he is, but still. 15% is the norm, plus there is no written rule that you have to even leave a tip. Its the waiters job to wait on the people eating in the restaurant, its called a tip for a reason, yes its nice to get but its not an expectation. 50$ is a pretty good tip and I sure wouldn't be complaining about it. People need to stop expecting things especially from actors, yep they make a lot of money, but they work hard for it, just like a waiter.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Who Cares? If the story is true, maybe the service was bad? No one knows for sure. If we get really bad service I refuse to leave a tip at all.

Did the waiter expect 25% of the bill? People really need to get over themselves and be THANKFUL that in this economic time that they even HAVE job!

Depending on the restaurant or cafe, wages for servers starts at minimum wage, so I can understand the need for tips. If you are lucky and get into a union house then you are making a liveable wage and tips are just icing on the cake. They are not a guarantee, and should never be expected. That is the mistake that many servers make--they figure that they are owed that 15% at every table, and if they don't get it, they get pi$$ed off. Now if Robert and his friends had come in just at closing and kept the entire staff on overtime so he and his friends could eat, and then left $50 at the end of the meal, they would have had something to complain about.

I always do 20% no matter what. I think 15% is perfectly acceptable. Maybe he had poor service or calculated wrong. He doesn't have to tip more bc he's famous. I wish tips were not expected. I'd like to tip on the kind of service I get. ~ Liz ~

I NEVER tipless than 20%... 20% is what he should have left at least! what is that, like $70?

Anonymous Anonymous said:

ive been a waitress before, from pubs to classy restaurants, and seriously...
i think that tip is great. its probably more than the server earns in one hour. people need to also understand that the server will have other customers and it adds up in the end. the server probably makes 300$ to 500$ in one day in tip plus their hourly wage. thats more than a lot of people make in their regular 8 hr job.

i fully agree here, i dont know y she would complain bout free money and that she will be getting more of it seen as it looks like she expects 15% from every1

Oh come on! It's not a given that you give a waiter or waitress a good tip. Maybe they were terrible! Just shy of 15% might have been very generous. We don't know what service he received (if this story is true). Also, he's not from the States. I don't know what the standard for tipping is in the UK. Maybe that would have been typical.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

The UK is not as into tipping as the USA, but 10% would be appropriate. You pay for food in a restaurant, the service should be included. I say this as a former waitress.

$50???? He probably didn't know how much to leave. $350 is rediculous.

Establishments need to step up and start paying their waitstaff a decent wage. I'm tired of being harped on to tip 15 - 20%. If someone does a great job I'll tip. If they don't (even if it's average) they get nothing. A TIP is for a job well done. Like previous posters have said: people expect a tip now and it's ridiculous.

I hope this isn't true... I like him but I also like good tippers! I know 15% is average, but as a former server, I know how much work goes into a $350 meal... so I hope they got what they deserved!!

It is my understanding that tipping for Europeans is different than for Americans. Let's give this guy a break!

Not everyone tips the same... I know people who tip 10% or less for everything. I tip 20% standard, great service=30-50% depending on the amount of the total bill, 15% if service sucked, and by sucky service I mean the waitress/waiter not refilling my drink after a long while and their attitude... nothing to do with the cook/food or how fast it gets to me. People don't understand that tips are sometimes divided between different people, like bus boys, etc so they don't even get that little money that you left. If someone is in a service job, obviously they are not doing that for their health. For someone as fortunate as Pattinson, I think people expect him to "share the wealth". To each their own I guess. Stingy tippers piss me off though.

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Maybe he just sucks at math ;)

In Australia we don't really tip much, Americans expect too much.

robyn robyn said:

In the UK they only tip about 10%, so maybe he's confused. Always tip 20%, even when the service is bad...

B!! B!! said:

I have never tipped in my life, I'm Australian and its just not as big of a deal as it is in the US, I assume it's pretty similar for the Brits.

As a uni student, on the odd occasion that I do go to a restaurant I usually end up being short on money for the rest of the week, so there'e no way I would tip 15-20%. How f**king ridiculous. The service that the waiter/waitress provides should be bloody included in the bill, it shouldn't be on the customer to make up for your crappy wage. Hound the boss, not the customer.

Poor Rob, $50 is freaking generous. It shouldn't be expected, period.

Nimbus Nimbus said:

Here in New Zealand tips are only offered if the service is exceptional... not a given. I spent many years working in service, I'd be stocked to get a us$50 tip... do you know how much money that is??? Seems to me like people in the USA have too much money to throw around.... if you need my account number just give me a yell!!!

Anonymous Anonymous said:

Tipping isn't such a big thing in england as it is in Amerca, of course we do tip but not to the extent that people do in america and considering Rob is from england, it would explain the reason for why he only tipped $50
