First Listen: Mariah Carey's I Want To Know What Love Is

I LOVE this song - the original. Foreigner shouldn't be touched. They should remain as is and it should be illegal to redo any of their songs.

But that's just not the way the world turns.

If someone had to remake 'I Want To Know What Love Is' I guess Mariah Carey is the best candidate.

Take a listen at both versions and let me know which one you prefer.

I'm not a huge Mariah fan, but I thought her version was beautiful too. I wonder though how much they are engineering her voice in the studio, because she sounded pretty busted the last two times she sang live (the MJ memorial service and the American's Got Talent show).

she DID sound busted those 2 times. The song's sounds great recorded but I don't know if she's gonna sound so great LIVE--Mariah honey, YOUR SLIPPIN! Get it together!!

she sounded that way because she was feeling very sad for the last of a good friend

MJ Memorial - she was too upset to sing properly....she even apologized for it...but shouldn't have...

AGT - that was pretty rough...i have to admit....BUT....i'll let u know...that not much engineering is done to her voice....because the reason why she sounds better in studio...is because it's easier to make those high notes happen when you're in a booth by yourself with solid acoustics.....its gonna be hard for her to perform that song live though...cuz she can't always make them happen exactly the same way during live performances....it's harder...

It wasn't horrible. She isn't my favorite singer, but she did do ok on this one. Her remake of Def Leppard's Headed for a Heartbreak however was a nightmare.

i don't think you guys realize how easy it is to sound GREAT in studio. you end up with a 4-5min song....that could have probably taken days/weeks to record. if your voice isn't up to par...u can take a 2 day break.....lol. however, with live performances.....you have 1 shot to get it right.

now as for Mariah's version.....when the song first starts...i wanted more power. yes, she does the whisper notes well.....but i expected full-on vocals from the jump. but.....she brought IT as the song progressed. which is actually the typical format she uses. the ending is just simply eargasmic. mmmmm.

simply because of that, i'm going with Mariah.

eargasmic...love that. I went back to the listen to the end one more time to see how "eargasmic" it was and the video link is already down. Bummer.

Mariah's take? Not so much.
Clay Aiken did a cover, and it's pretty nice. :)

me thinks Gayken did a better version than Mooriah, and gayken version is crapfest. this power ballad ruined by this pig into a screeching mess.

I actually liked how Mariah covered the song...

And I don't think a song could ever be better than the original... cause they are two different things...

But I just like the fact that Mariah is singing properly.. and don't give me that OBSESSED crap that she came out... ugh! at least, she's still in touch with her old-school roots...

The Foreigner Version felt more sincere and melodic, less halting, more flowing. I liked the refrain of Mariah's better, but my overall favorite version is still Foreigner's.

She did good on this one, but you can’t really remake this. Foreigner’s version is CLASSIC.

This just goes to show that everyone has different tastes in music.....some people prefer mariah's high notes while others like her refrain/whispering part....so...imagine how much pressure it has on mariah when she's making thiis cover...cuz she realizes that all her fans have different tastes....and wants to satisfy everyone.......and this album's supposed to be all for the fans....and yet...people are still complainiiing and bitching...about it.....how ungrateful..

MARIAH CAN SING WHATEVER SHE WANTS, PEOPLE!! NOBODY CAN SING LIKE HER, I LIKE THE ORIGINAL VESION TOO BUT PLEASE!! SHE IS AMAZING. MY GOD.

I actually like Clay's voice; it's very strong, and his version is alright. I'm sure he would prefer to sing his own stuff, but there ya go. He's with Decca instead of RCA now so maybe he'll get to do so. As to calling him Gayken...rude. And bordering on homophobic, actually. I'm not a defender of the man but hellzbellz, bastardizing his name so you can slam his sexuality says a whole lot about you, and pretty much makes him the victim.

Grow the hell up, okay?
