Art Conn Talks About Fall Fashion

Marshalls partnered with Art Conn, one of the stylists from American Idol to create looks for their Back to School shoot. Inspired by American Idol, Gossip Girl and Twilight, Art styled looks that you'll probably be seeing in the halls of high schools, on both guys and gals. I had the opportunity to chat with him about this experience as well as the hottest trends for Fall.
What is your favorite look from the Marshalls Back to School shoot?
I love the one inspired by Gossip Girl because you can go a little crazy with the style, like mix plaid with patterns.
What do you like at Marshalls? Do you shop there?
Yes, I do shop at Marshalls. I actually shopped there for Jordin Sparks when she was on AI. She's such a sweet, wonderful person. Some time ago, I even worked with a group of women on dressing them for the red carpet and I was blown away by the dresses. Not many people know its an amazing resource. To find a store like Marshalls is a gold mine. You'll find many stylists perusing the racks at Marshalls.
What are some celeb clients that you've worked with?
I've worked with Tyra Banks on the first season of the talk show. I've done tours with Pink and Madonna, worked with Life & Style on shoots with young stars, like Kristin Cavallari. I recently worked with the last Bachelorette.
Let's talk American Idol. I heard that you take the AI kids shopping in malls.
Yes, I do. We go to the high end stores as well as stores like Banana Republic. Its about the contestants creating their own images and not necessarily adhering to brands.
Do you have a favorite look from the past seasons?
I don't put anything on the stage that I don't like and the contestant doesn't feel comfortable in, but I particularly like Adam (Lambert) and his white suits. White suits usually don't work well on camera but he looked like an angel in the white. He worked it. I also loved seeing Katherine McPhee go from an understated jeans and Tshirt girl to this glamor goddess.
Fashion Week is coming up! Any lines that you're excited to see?
I'm excited to see Monarchy. And also Tadashi for their dresses and gowns. They always put on a good show.
What are some items that INO readers should have in their wardrobes for Fall?
Definitely something plaid. Its huge for Fall. If you're cautious about the trend, try it, even if its just a little handbag. Boots are always big for Fall. This season, its all about the textures, like suede. Its about rich, colorful textures.
What's one item that you think every woman should have this season?
That would have to be the cropped leather jacket. It can go with anything, day and night.
