Tyler Perry Discusses Abusive Childhood

Tyler Perry explains why the movie 'Precious' moved him so much that he signed on as executive producer after seeing it at a film festival: because of his own experiences as an abused child.

"[A]s I child I always thought I would die before I grew up...

"My father came home, mad at the world," he writes. "He was drunk, as he was most of the time. He got the vacuum cleaner extension cord and trapped me in a room and beat me until the skin was coming off my back."

That's only one of the many horrific experiences Tyler recounts on his website. He also writes about watching his father beat his mother, his own experience being sexually abused by a friend's mother, and one time when his grandmother bathed him in ammonia.

Tyler wrote that any money he or Oprah Winfrey make from 'Precious' will be donated to charity and why he wants people to see this film.

I sat there in tears realizing that somehow, by the grace of God, I made it through. My tears were tears of joy, being thankful that I made it... It gave me so much hope after watching it. For everyone who has been a Precious, male or female, this movie will make you so glad you made it through.

What a powerful endorsement for a film.

This movie is getting AMAZING praise and reviews from critics. Oscar style praise and they say Mariah Carey is EXCELLENT and that Monique should win an Oscar.

I cannot imagine what would possess a parent from doing these things to their child, yet it happens all the time????? People are soo complicated and odd.

Poor guy. I am glad he is okay, and I hope anyone going through abuse right now can get out of it somehow.

Good God! It does make you shudder - how do people survive such things in life and still find beauty and happiness in the world. My heart breaks for him. :( What happened to him was completely saddistic.
I've read the book "Push", which Precious is based on...it was so hard to read, yet so hard to put down at the same time. I know I am going to see the movie, but I can't imagine how they are going to cover the content in the book. The abuse that this man, and Precious Jone's character suffered in their real and fictional lives is just so horrifying...I may not be able to sit through it. I will certainly be bringing a HUGE box of tissue!
I gotta say also, I'm not sure I'm going to like Monique in this movie. I am so used to seeing her in strong, uplifting, funny female roles I don't want this to dent my fandom of her!
